It has been two years since Kalea miraculously woke from a deep coma, a period of forced unconsciousness that followed a harrowing sacrifice. She and her formidable wolf spirit, Empress, successfully trapped the malevolent soul of Radcliffe, the disgraced ancestor of Kalea's mate, Edward. Radcliffe, born into royalty, had been stripped of his place in the line of succession after a tyrannical attempt to execute Horatio, the beloved adopted son of the then-crowned Princess and Kalea’s forefather. The cost of stopping Radcliffe was the annihilation of the Empress's spirit, leaving Kalea alive but profoundly diminished.

For the past two years, Kalea and Edward have been living a constant journey between two worlds: the rugged territory of the Hounds of the Night Pack in Wyoming, where they are Alpha and Luna, and the traditional, politically complex halls of the royal werewolf pack in England. This continuous movement has been to prepare for the day they will ascend the Throne of Lycans and take on the roles of King and Queen of all werewolves.

The main obstacle to their destiny is just as unavoidable as it is personal: Kalea still has no wolf form. Her remarkable, self-sacrificing act that saved their kind now becomes the very rule that could destroy her birthright. The Royal Lycan Parliament, an old, tradition-filled body, considers a leader without a wolf to be too risky, insisting that a ruler must have their full lycanthropic power to lead the royal armies and keep order among packs worldwide.

Though the official crowning is still decades away, the prospect of losing her inherited right due to a condition that literally saved their entire species burns within Kalea. She continues to exhibit many of her former lycanthrope abilities—her heightened sense of smell and hearing remain sharp, and she possesses a preternatural speed that few humans could match. Yet, the essential, defining component of a lycanthrope—the wolf counterpart, the spirit—is missing, a void felt by her and noticed by every wary eye in the royal court.

Kalea’s family, particularly those most loyal to the Crown, have been relentlessly pushing her to undergo the ceremonial ritual of being "turned" by a powerful Alpha, which would effectively bind her to a new, replacement wolf spirit. They argue this is the only way to safeguard the throne and, paradoxically, the best way to honor Empress’s memory—by ensuring her sacrifice was not in vain.

However, Kalea feels deeply conflicted. To accept a new wolf would be to erase the memory of Empress, a spiritual and emotional betrayal that cuts her to the core. Her bond with Empress was not just biological; it was a profound partnership built on love and shared power. She is caught in an impossible vice: Live as a human, or take on a new wolf counterpart by having her grandmother, the former Queen, turn her.

The fate of the werewolf monarchy, and the very stability of their society, hinges not on a war or a grand quest, but on Kalea's deeply personal choice—to uphold ancient tradition or defend the memory of the greatest sacrifice ever made.

What the Royal Pack, Parliament, and even Kalea do not realize is that the sacrifice was not final. In the hellish confines where Radcliffe's soul was contained, the residual spark of Empress's spirit persisted. Through sheer willpower, or perhaps the enduring strength of her bond with Kalea, Empress manages the impossible: she escapes Radcliffe’s spiritual prison.

Empress is now free, pulled back toward the land of the living by an instinct she can't place. However, the psychic toll of trapping a soul as ancient and powerful as Radcliffe has shattered her own consciousness. Upon her escape, Empress has no memory of her former life, her tremendous power, or the human counterpart she died to protect. She is a powerful wolf spirit cast adrift in the world, instinctually aware of a looming danger, but possessing no map, no name, and no knowledge of where to find the one person she desperately needs to warn: Kalea.

The race is now on, though none of the players know it. Kalea is fighting a political and emotional battle to honor a spirit she believes is dead. In contrast, that same powerful spirit, amnesiac and lost, is wandering the world, unaware she is the only one who can save her queen from both the Parliament and the resurfacing darkness.

Prologue
Prologue There was no light, only a screaming, relentless pressure. It had been my world for two years. I was the anchor, the boundary, the sheer force of will that kept the ancient, malignant soul of Radcliffe locked in its hellish prison. I was supposed to be gone. Annihilated. My sacrifice was meant to be final. But the pain, the terrible psychic weight of containing such darkness, somehow became the very thing that kept a desperate, residual spark of me alive. Even within that void, something was pulling—an instinct, a raw, desperate tug that transcended the annihilation I’d suffered. It was an urge to be—the urge to get out. I didn't know how, but I clung to that tug. It was stronger than the crushing dark, stronger than Radcliffe’s endless malice. It was a fragment of a memory I couldn't access, a love I couldn't name, a partnership that refused to be severed. With a soundless, impossible tear, I broke free. I shed the containment field I had become, exploding back into the realm of the living. But the victory was a devastating unmaking. The sheer psychic toll of trapping Radcliffe had not just damaged me—it had shattered my consciousness. I was a formless power, a wolf spirit made of instinct and urgency, yet completely blank. My name, Empress, was a silent word I didn't know. My tremendous power was a force I couldn't direct. My human counterpart, the queen I died to protect, was a face I couldn't picture. I was just a powerful, lost spirit. But the instinct remained: Danger. The prison was broken, and Radcliffe's freedom was now looming. And I had to find someone. It was a frantic, terrifying need. I was pulled toward the land of the living by an invisible, powerful thread, but when I looked around, there was no map, no scent, and no name. I had to warn her. I had to find... Her. The one person. The one I desperately needed to find.
