LILY opened her eyes slowly, surfacing through a haze of warmth and the steady sound of breathing that didn’t belong to her. For a moment, she didn’t know where she was. The world felt too soft, too quiet, too safe. Then she felt the arm around her waist. Jeremiah’s arm. Her lashes fluttered open. The fire had burned low in the hearth, glowing faintly across the cabin walls. Snow pressed against the edges of the windows outside, the early-morning gray making everything look muted, like the world was still wrapped in a blanket.
