CHAPTER EIGHT

The tension in the air was palpable, thicker than the humid night, as Aiden’s eyes snapped toward the approaching footsteps. I could hear them too, growing louder with each passing second. My heart pounded in my chest as if it knew what was coming before I did. I didn’t have to look to know who it was. It was Mara, followed by a few of the other women from the pack. I could feel their eyes on me before I even saw their faces. I wasn’t sure what they expected from me now. whether they wanted me to cower, or stand tall, and face them head-on. But Aiden was still watching me, his gaze unwavering, and in that moment, I realized something. He wasn’t just protecting me physically; he was protecting something deeper. My dignity, my pride, my ability to stand my ground. It was maddening, yet it was the one thing that kept me from running. Mara’s voice broke through the silence, low and commanding. “Aiden,” she said, not bothering to hide the edge in her tone, “we’re here for her. It’s time she proves herself.” I didn’t need to look at her to know that the challenge in her voice was real. She wasn’t asking for my permission. She wasn’t asking for Aiden’s approval. It was clear that they were all waiting for me to falter, to show any sign of weakness. But something in me snapped. I had been trained hard for weeks, had endured the pain, the exhaustion, the constant pushback. I had worked for this moment for the right to prove that I was more than what they thought of me. I didn’t care if I was still bruised, still broken in places I couldn’t heal yet. I wouldn’t let them see me as weak. Aiden’s gaze never wavered from mine. He didn’t step in front of me, didn’t move to shield me from the others. He was giving me the space to decide for myself. Mara stepped forward, her stance confident, as if she knew she had already won. “You’re nothing but a toy to Aiden, Caitlyn,” she sneered, her words dripping with venom. “Just like every other woman he’s claimed. Do you think you’re different?” My breath caught in my throat, but I forced it out, standing straighter. This wasn’t just about proving something to them. It was about proving it to me. “No,” I said, my voice low but firm. “I’m not here to be anyone’s toy.” Aiden’s eyes flashed with something unreadable, but he didn’t speak. His silence was both a blessing and a curse, giving me the space to fight for myself, but also reminding me of the stakes. I could feel the weight of his claim hanging over me, his protection, his gaze, his expectation that I could handle this. Mara’s smirk deepened. “Then prove it. Fight me, Caitlyn. Show me you’re worth the time Aiden’s wasting on you.” I clenched my fists at my sides, the challenge hanging in the air between us. It was the moment I had been waiting for the moment when they would stop looking at me as fragile as a potential failure. But the real question was—did I have what it took? I nodded, jaw set. “Fine. I’ll fight you.” The circle of women began to form around us, their eyes cold and assessing. I could feel their judgment, but I didn’t care. I couldn’t. This was my moment to prove I wasn’t a victim, that I wasn’t someone they could push around. I could do this. Mara’s eyes glittered with anticipation. She had been watching me closely, trying to figure out how far I had come. But she didn’t know what she was about to face. The second I lunged at her, the sound of the pack behind us faded away. It was just me, just the fight. She countered quickly, her movements precise, faster than I had expected. She pushed me back with a quick strike to my side, and I stumbled, feeling the sting of her blow. But I refused to fall. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction. I quickly regained my footing, ignoring the pain on my side. This wasn’t about winning or losing. It was about standing my ground. I launched myself at her again, this time more calculated, more aware of her movements. I used my body weight to slam into her, knocking her off balance. The momentum caught her off guard, and I followed through with a strike to her ribs. She grunted, surprised, but she didn’t back down. Instead, she came at me with renewed ferocity. Her training was stronger, but so was mine. My time in the pack had taught me more than just how to fight—it had taught me how to endure. The fight seemed to stretch on forever, each blow landing with a heavy thud. My muscles screamed in protest, but I pushed through it, refusing to let her see how close I was to breaking. Finally, with a swift kick to her side, I sent Mara stumbling back, her face flushing with the effort. I stood there, chest heaving, sweat pouring down my back, but I didn’t allow myself to feel victory yet. I hadn’t won. Not yet. Mara didn’t collapse. Instead, she straightened, glaring at me, her breath ragged. “You’re stronger than I thought,” she muttered, more to herself than to me. “But that doesn’t mean you’ve won.” Before I could react, she launched herself at me once more, but this time, I was ready. I sidestepped her, grabbing her arm and twisting it behind her back, pinning her to the ground in one swift movement. The sound of her grunts as she struggled against me filled the air, but I held my position, my breath coming in short bursts. My body trembled with exhaustion, but I didn’t let go. “I’m not weak,” I said, my voice hoarse but strong. “I’m not broken. And I’m not going anywhere.” The pack was silent. I could feel their eyes on us, but for the first time, I didn’t care. I had done what I needed to do. Mara finally stopped struggling, her body going slack beneath my grip. I slowly released her, stepping back, my chest heaving with the effort. The silence that followed was deafening. I turned to Aiden, expecting something—praise, anger, anything - but his expression was unreadable. His eyes locked onto mine, and I saw something flicker there, something that might have been pride, but it was gone as quickly as it came. “You’ve passed,” Aiden said quietly, his voice low but steady. But I could feel it. This wasn’t over. I had fought for my place here, but now, I had a new battle ahead. One that wasn’t just about strength but about survival. And I knew, deep down, that the hardest fight was yet to come.
