Prologue

"I love you," said the man.     "I love you too," replied the woman. Just then gunshots rang out. The woman cringed in fear; her arms encircling the small bundle praying to whatever gods would listen that the bundle stayed asleep. The bundle stirred, and a lock of purple hair spilled out of the blanket. When the woman looked down, she saw the small bundle staring at her intently. The woman was mesmerized by the baby's eyes. Her eyes held galaxies in them. The man stepped closer also mesmerized by the baby. He leaned in and kissed the top of the baby's head. He turned his attention to the woman. He grabbed her and kissed her. It was not a chaste kiss, nor one full of desire. It was full of desperation.      Their kiss broke at the sound of a second round of gunshots. It was much closer this time. "Listen to me closely, love. You must take her to a human city, the larger the better. Teach her about us, about our history. Teach her to be strong," he said with a rasp in his throat. "I will join you when I can. But for now, I must leave you. I will lead them away." With a last parting look, the man left. The woman waited as she listened for the pursuit to follow him. Once the sounds were gone, she slipped out of her hiding spot. She sniffed the air carefully, and found what she was looking for, the smell of asphalt. She found the road, and ran until the sun started rising. The sun got higher, and she knew that she would need to find shelter and soon. She could feel her exposed skin starting to burn. She darted into the forest, and found a small natural lean-to. It would have to do. She placed the baby as far into the shelter as she could and curled around her to protect her. Looking that the dawning sun, praying for safety, she drifted to sleep.     The woman woke instantly when she heard the baby's soft cries. The woman picked her up, and the baby settled immediately. The woman looked around; night had fallen. But to the woman, her senses were amplified in the dark. She knew the baby would be hungry and would need to be changed. The woman took a small dagger hidden inside her dress, and drew a thin line across her finger. She squeezed the finger to make blood appear. She then gave the bloody finger to the baby. The baby suckled for a few minutes before sighing in contentment. The woman picked up the baby and began making her way to the nearest human establishment. She passed a sign that read the city was 45 miles away. She ran through the night, knowing her speed would get them here before the next sunrise. She checked into a rundown hotel and fell onto the bed in exhaustion. She fell asleep while cradling the baby, who had yet to make a single sound.
