I was abruptly woken up to loud pounding on the door, opening my eyes I noticed it was barely sunrise. I grunted as I got up putting mu pants and dress on as the knocking continued. As I approached the door the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, the feeling in my gut was danger and Reign’s restless pacing worried me even more.
“Who is it?” I asked as the knocking ceased.
A shuffling of feet made me realize there was more than one person on the other side of the door. “I’m looking for a man, I’m with the kings guard open this door” The voice was hesitant at first then the man spoke more firmly.
Confused, they couldn’t possibly mean ash. “Um do you have any proof of who you are, no offence but I’m a woman all alone in a strange place and you can’t be too careful” I said nonchalant.
There was a pause before the man spoke again. “You can either open the door willingly or we will break it down, the choice is yours.” His tone was a bit more threatening. I began debating whether they are who they say they are and once they check the room, we are good, or I’m in for a fight with a strange group of people. Either way there’s only one way in and one way out, sighing I unlatched the door opening it to see a group of 4 men in leather and metal armor standing outside the door. The man directly in front seemed to be a man in his late thirties with reddish brown hair and tan skin. The chest plate they all wore bore a seal, that I remember from a book I had read, the royal family seal.
I breathed a sigh of relief as I opened the door wider” see only me in here” I said motioning around.
The man took a step inside scanning the room. “Indeed, there is no man here” he said as he inhaled deeply and spoke again. “But there was” his eyes shifted slightly from brown to yellow. Before I could respond he grabbed my wrist jerking me closer to him as he inhaled me.
“I see he’s been busy” the man said in a half growl. I couldn’t help but flush in embarrassment as I winced at how strong his grip was. “Where did he go?” the man asked.
“He said he was traveling on business on his father behalf, that’s all I know I swear” I was panic talking as the mans grip tightened. “I swear I just met him tonight”. The other guards were now searching my room tossing things around.
The man scoffed. “Just met him tonight, do you take me for an i***t? You both were spotted at the same tavern just a day ago then just happen to meat up here?” the guard said, and he began to put silver shackles on my wrist.
“Wait what, no I don’t know him it was just a one-night stand, a booty call.” I said watching as they packed up my stuff.
He looked at me weird. “Is that code for where he is? Is the one night stand a tavern somewhere?” He spoke as he pushed me towards the door guiding me to walk, now regretting not putting on my shoes first.
I looked over my shoulder giving him a confused look before speaking. “Um not a one-night stand is when you have s*x with someone for one night only then never see them again.” I could tell by the look on his face he didn’t believe me. We made it outside where a few of those magic carriages were waiting along with a few more guards.
The man handed me off to a younger male as he addressed him. “Take her to the palace she knows something, get her to talk one way or another, we can’t let the grand Luna down.” He said before splitting off with another group no doubt to continue searching for that bastard… I’m now mentally kicking myself as I’m being thrown into what I assume to be their version of a cop car wagon since there were bars on the windows and now door handles on the inside. I decided best to stay quiet, maybe they had a good judicial system here and maybe I might get a lawyer of sorts…. Maybe. The carriage began moving as if being pulled but an invisible force. Well on the bright side I get to see the sunrise.
I had no idea how long the journey would be nor what road or path we were taking. All I knew was how utterly bored I was, there was only so much nature you could look at before being dizzy as the carriage jostled around over the dirt road. I had assumed the reason I had not been able to communicate with Reign had something to do with the silver cuffs.
Hours had passed as we slowly came to a stop, it wasn’t long before the door swung open and the young male from early motioned for me to exit. Following suit, I stepped out into the cool autumn air. “My name is Devin” I said taking the guards by surprise.
“Micheal” he mumbled back adjusting before saying. “We stopped for a short break”.
“nice” I said awkwardly.” Um how long until we get there?” I asked as he looked at me debating whether to say or not.
“It’s a two-day journey we will stop again to set up camp as the sun sets then we will ride through the next day.” He said being as less descriptive as possible.
“Ok ok… any chance I can get a pee break?” I said looking at only male guards. Instantly they all got as nervous as me. I put my hands up in surrender before speaking again. “If I promise not to run and stay in earshot of you guys can these come off … if not one of you is going to have to get up close and personal with me”
Micheal approached me as he unlocked the cuffs sliding them off. “They go back on when you come back, you have two minutes.” He said tossing me a roll of toilet paper. I was glad toilet paper was nice everywhere. I found the nearest tree walking behind it using it as back rest as I pulled down my pants and relieved myself.
I was fixing my pants walking back towards the men. “Any chance I can get my shoes?” I said as Michael walked to me with the cuffs.
“Tom, grab her shoes” Michael said facing the cuffs back on my wrist. The one named tom had brought over my boots placing them inside the carriage.
“you’ll have to put them on while we leave, we need to stick to our schedule” Michael said helping back into my carriage and heading back to his.
I managed to grab my boots before the carriage began moving again. Putting boots on handcuffed in a moving carriage should be a sport because it is not easy, as I hit the ground on every bump yelling every curse word I knew until I finally had them on… well on enough to walk.
The day moved on as my boredom grew to me staring off into space daydreaming about a fat roasted pig. It was reaching that point in the evening where I assumed we would be making camp and sure enough I felt the carriage slow as it pulled off the dirt road to a clearing in the trees. Well, this Is camp I guess.
