I stood immobilized, the words of this woman penetrating my mind as if they were trying to warn me off. Elijah's voice sounded so far away and the seeming calmness in it appeared to be forced.
"What is that supposed to mean?"
I stared at her as if this wasn't happening. As if she isn't telling me this. As if this whole conversation was just a trick my tired brain was playing on my eyes. Her facial expression didn't change, but her eyes were dull and void of any emotion other than pity. She glanced at my boyfriend, her stance unchanging and her hard gaze unwavering. She was challenging the other to a fight that we all knew he couldn't win. This woman was way too smart, way too advanced for Elijah to turn the game score around.
"You are unstable. Not your health, but you yourself."
