~ Princess Mylie’s PoV
Mike scares me, but in a good way, I haven’t ever seen him that way before, the night I was attacked by turned vampires.
He had arrived right on time as if he had been notified or something, or had he been nearby to have heard something, because those guys were really good and silent.
Mike was like a savage, tearing into them and breaking them without remorse, the very one in the room with me when he chased after the others, was left in serious pain after all his limb joints had been popped the opposite direction.
I just had to know him out by hitting a table leg hard on his head twice, I feared he had died even when I could hear no heartbeat thumping from within him afterwards.
But then I remembered what Mike had said about the turned vampires, that they were more dead than alive, unlike the pure breeds.
I had worked on him quickly, restoring his popped joints only because I don’t know how long he’d be out cold, lest he resumes on his job to kidnap me.
‘Why would anyone try to kidnap me?’ I thought to myself as I moved towards the window to check on Mike ‘No one knew me here’.
Then I saw Mike dragging a lifeless and headless body after him, it was the one who had hit me, I could only now recognize him from his clothing, seeing as his head was hanging apart from his body in Mike’s other hand.
Mike had been my knight in shining armor that night, straight out of the human story books, I had only wanted to faint in his arms like a spoilt princess.
“Maya!? You ok?” I heard a man’s voice said, bringing me out of my thoughts and to the present, my date with Victor Markham.
“what? Oh yeah, I’m fine” I replied him, I took a glance around the overly fancy restaurant, there weren’t many people here, and I could sense there were supernatural here as well.
The restaurant was elegantly decorated and there was a lot of candlelit chandeliers hanging down from the ceiling to each table.
I had read about the place as soon as I got his call and he gave me this location, a coworker even saw me running off to get the magazine for the restaurant and then cane back reading in a rush.
She had laughed and asked me why I couldn’t just google them rather than buying books about them, she at that pointed out that I read books more than I used the phone and asked if I was one of them anti-internet people.
I gave the most convenient excuse at that time “I just love to read books” which wasn’t a lie, I knew tons of protective spells just for books so I could take and read them underwater.
“You still haven’t made an order, don’t you like what they serve here?” Victor Markham asked me, he looked as if he was about to regret bringing me here and instead take me to an even more expensive and classy restaurant.
“Oh no no, it’s just that they have a lot of variety to select from and I’m indecisive at the moment” I answered in half truth, the actual reason why I hadn’t ordered was because I didn’t know which of their meals would have fish or blood or other creepy things the supernatural here eat.
“Why don’t you choose for us” I requested from him “Something plain human for me though and no seafood” I added in a lower tone, the names of the meals on the menu were just too confusing and the magazine and books had been no help on that.
“Well, it’s fine then” he said with a chuckle “I guess I will select our whole meal including the wine we are to take” he added smirking.
“Plain and normal if you will please” I quickly added again with an uneasy smile.
“Cmon now, I can’t order for you what isn’t meant for you, you need to have more trust in me than that” Victor Markham said to me.
I nodded and hid my face with my hand as I blushed, he checked the menu one more time then signaled the waiter and whispered to his ear.
I took the glass of complementary champagne (as the pamphlet had said) and took a swig in hopes of trying to calm my nerves, but instead the sharp taste and sudden heat and coolness from it shocked me so much that I almost spurted it out.
But I gulped it down and let out a slow breath to calm myself as I gently placed the glass down, I’m not going to try that again anytime soon.
Soon enough two waiters came rolling a trolley filled with what Victor Markham had ordered and one of them started placing them on the table in our front.
The slight aroma that wafted out assaulted my nostrils with overly pleasant smells, not one pungent smell was there, meaning no fish or any other sea creature and no blood.
The waiters also poured the wine Victor Markham had selected into new wine glasses and left the bottle in a jar of ice on the trolley, I also noticed that on the trolley were still covered trays yet to be placed on our table, I figured that had to be the dessert.
As we started eating though, Victor Markham started to throw slight questions at me, like where I was from, which school I had attended, what brought me here and how I came to work for Mike.
I was well prepared for these questions though, ever since the experience with Mike’s family, I had promised myself that such wouldn’t happen again and I would be well prepared for any and all questions.
So now, my name is Maya Melbourne, hailed from Finland where I had started my life but cane to the US to study and hopefully settle, I studied medicine while offering a business course as well which enabled me to be able to work for such a firm as Mike’s.
“How did you meet Mike?” Victor Markham asked me after his initial survey on my life, I’m starting to see that those on the surface are really nosy, probably because there were so many of them and there isn’t a way to know about everyone, so whenever the chance arises they try to find out everything they can about the other person.
I smiled at his question “Well it was sort of an accidental meeting, I was in a kind of bad place and he happened to be around, he offered his help without as much as seeking anything back from me, not even my gratitude and then he still went ahead and hired me so I could use my knowledge and skills to help out around here” I answered.
I had as well planned that reply beforehand, there was no way I would be caught off guard, especially not by Victor Markham, a soon to be reunited best friend to Mike
“Do you love him?” he suddenly asked me.
I choked on the piece of veggie in my mouth, what! How could he have known, I thought to myself in a panic but then looking at his expression, I got to know that he was truly only being inquisitive not that he had figured it out.
He hadn’t caught my slight choking although I had changed it into a slight clearing of my throat, so I hadn’t given out myself yet.
I slowed my chewing and made it obvious so as to while away time while I thought on how best to answer him in a way that would throw him off the idea in general.
“Mike is my boss, first of, having any sort of emotional relationship with him would disrupt our work ethics, Second, he is an overly busy person having little or no time for himself not to talk of others, third, I don’t fall in love just like that, a lot of notable events had to have occurred before that can happen and to me work takes precedence over love” I answered and from his expression I saw a bit of relief.
“Hmmm, work over love uhn? You’re that type?” he asked before placing a medium helping of food in his mouth.
“Yeah, I am that type” I answered back and drank a bit of the wine, it was sweet and sour at the same time but the taste wasn’t as shocking as the champagne had been, probably because thanks to the champagne my taste buds already knew what to expect from alcohol.
“So what are those notable events you mentioned, I would like to know them, at least as a guideline to the way to your heart” he said to me.
I took a few moments to digest both the food I just swallowed and the implication of his words, had I heard him right? Did he mean what I think he meant? He wants to chase after my heart? Well good luck there.
“Now that is a topic to be discussed over another table at another date” I answered him, truth was I had no idea what to answer with and postponing it to another date that may or may not happen seemed the best way out.
The rest of the date, we talked about casual things, nothing love related and nothing even supernatural related which was a bummer because I really wished to know about the supernatural from his own point of view as well, but he wasn’t Mike who had promised to tell me all about the supernatural whenever I ask.
My favorite part of the date came when part of the still covered tray was opened to reveal cake as the dessert, I love cake and so I couldn’t hide my glee at seeing it.
Victor Markham noticed this time and smirked, I felt as if I had just shown him one of the ways to my heart.
My mood turned sour soon after though as previous thoughts assaulted my mind;
The realization that we might not be facing merfolk back home in the deep ocean, the pursue of my heart’s desire, and now the issue of Victor Markham and his wish to chase after my heart.
Life in the deep had been simple, things here on the surface? Not so much, but I wasn’t given up yet, it’s all part of the experience after all.
