PART TWO: THE BREAKING (Continued) Day Two. Novalee woke to the sound of the door opening. Not locked anymore—Dante wanted her to know she could walk out anytime. That she'd choose to stay. That she had nowhere else to go. He stood in the doorway, already dressed in one of his white suits. The burn scars on his face were healing, the bandages gone now. The damage was permanent—blistered, discolored skin down the left side of his face and neck. He smiled when he saw her awake. It made the scars pull grotesquely. "Good morning, little star."
