Aaron’s pupils shrank sharply. His mind went blank.
“The baby’s… gone…?”
He’d only just begun to feel the joy of that new life coming—barely had time to embrace the hope of it. And now it was gone?
“H-How could that be? NO ONE told me that! They only said you were pushed, that you hurt your arms and legs.”
His eyes moved slowly to Emily’s heavily bandaged right leg, then drifted upward to her stomach—but he didn’t dare look long. The blanket covered everything. He couldn’t see, and just the thought made his gaze flinch away.
Emily said nothing. She just looked at him, her bloodshot eyes cold and steady.
Aaron frowned. A crushing weight settled in his chest, spinning his thoughts into chaos.
“No... No way. You’re lying, right?”
