Ivy watched him leave with a blank face. She expected Luke to throw a larger fit, perhaps even go to the extremes to get her punished. Unexpectedly, he was the most level headed among them.
Alpha Victor walked in steadily, silently taking in the scene as it unfolded before him. The maids quickly abandoned their gossips and bowed to the Alpha. Unlike Luke, he did not rush.
His gaze swept over the bowing heads. It paused on Ivy, who remained standing at the foot of the stairs, and squinted.
Alpha Victor's gaze lingered on Ivy for a while, assessing her from head to toe.
"Clean up the mess and get back to your duties." Alpha Victor ordered, slowly as he walked towards the stairs. He did not mention the incident, Emma or Ivy.
The command was enough. The maids scattered immediately. Their chaos was replaced with quiet obedience. If Ivy did not know better, she would've assumed the command included her as well. Her body almost reacted to it.
Within minutes, the hall emptied, leaving behind faint echo of footsteps and the lingering weight of what just happened.
Ivy collapsed against the staircase. The pain became unbearable now that there was nothing to distract her from it. Her breathing was forced. Every breath felt like a stab into her lungs.
A faint sound of door closing was heard from upstairs. Ivy closed her eyes and smiled, almost mockingly at herself for being so easy to tample on.
She stood up unsteadily and climbed up the stairs, one at a time. She reached the top and looked down, staring at the spot where Emma had been moments ago.
Ivy knew her place in this house. Their care and love came at a heavy cost, one that Ivy couldn't afford. She didn't want it either.
However, she didn't survive three years of hell only to have her dignity trampled on by them. She didn't push Emma and it was the truth whether they liked it or not. Ivy had to prove it or her life would only get harder in the Silver moon pack.
The news of Emma's fatal fall escaped the walls of pack house and inevitably reached Jaxon, who was back in the Moonfall pack for his duties.
He was sorting through the old files on his desk when the door swung open and a lanky looking guy walked in.
It was his younger brother, Mason. His entire personality was based on making life harder for Jaxon. From getting into scandals to making sure Jaxon never got out of anything without a headache, it was this younger brother who posed the biggest challenge of his life.
Mason walked in, hands in pockets and a smirk that spelled mischief. He pulled a chair for himself, propping his legs on the desk right next to Jaxon's hand.
Anyone else would have their arms and legs chopped and fed to dogs. Mason, on the other hand, held no fear of death under his brother's warning glare.
The sole of his shoe landed on the book Jaxon was holding. The Alpha pulled on it only for Mason to resist and later kick it away. The push and pull had different results on both sides.
Seeing frustration build up on Jaxon's face was incredibly amusing to Mason. He smiled so hard his eyes turned into crescents. However, he knew where his limits were. He pulled back his leg right when Jaxon raised his arm to strike.
The desk caved under his raw strength. Mason quickly stepped back, coughing out the dust in his lungs. "What was that for? Will it kill you to have some fun?"
"I don't have time for fun." Jaxon dusted his arms as he said.
Mason shrugged carelessly, "You're so boring. Is that why Ivy left you?"
The air stilled. Jaxon lifted his gaze to see the playful smirk wiped off his face, replaced by a provocative stare.
Mason was a troublemaker who joked around a lot but he rarely provoked him face to face. Whenever he did, the result was always the same. Disaster.
"Watch your mouth. You'll get in trouble because of it." Jaxon gritted out. "You're the last person getting an explanation from me. Get out of here. I'm not as free as you."
"Of course. The high and mighty Alpha; so busy he forgets his own fiancèe is stuck in the palace while he's getting cozy with her sister in her own house. I hope I'm never that busy."
"Mason!" Jaxon exclaimed, as if it would drown the rising shame inside him.
"What?!" Mason shouted just as loud in return. His eyes were red and his voice shook as he said, "I heard Ivy's back in Silver mane. Did you even go to see her? Mom and dad are already preparing for your formal engagement with Emma. Is it so easy to be shameless these days? Where do you get the face so think that none of it matters to you anymore?!"
"Shut up, Mason. You don't know what's going on -"
"Oh I know what's going on. You're just an opportunistic piece of s**t. That's all there is to know." Mason spat.
A vein twiched on Jaxon's forehead. His patience had worn thin the past couple of days. From travelling to pack matters, his engagement and lingering thoughts of Ivy drained him of the ability to form a single new thought.
The last thing he needed was to argue with Mason over something superficial.
"I don't have the energy for this, Mason." Jaxon muttered, his voice restrained. "If you're looking for a fight, come another day. Today's not it."
Jaxon turned his back to Mason, putting an end to the conversation.
The room was heavy with thick silence. Mason stood there staring at his back, feeling a twist of disappointed. He never imagined his brother would be the kind of person to run away from what he'd done.
Mason was younger than Jaxon by two years. He spent most of his life looking up at Jaxon, admiring him. He watched him and Ivy fall in love so effortlessly, it was eviable. Until it all fell apart far too easily.
He couldn't care less about a love that ended. It was about respect and honor.
And no matter what happened between them, his brother had no right to treat Ivy the way he did.
"You're not gone yet?" Jaxon snapped.
"I am not -"
Suddenly, a sharp knock took the words away from Mason. His anger simmered internally while on the outside he put on a delicate appearance that the Alpha's younger brother should have.
Jaxon scoffed at his pretense. He fixed a few things around the room before he answered, "Come in."
The door swung open to reveal a man in his late twenties. His striking pale grey eyes landed on the broken desk. Mason stiffened against his will.
"Is everything alright, Alpha?" The man asked, casting a meaningful glance at Mason. The quiet question droused the tension between the two brothers.
