Chapter four: Alexander’s POV

1766 Words
The next morning, I woke up with an objective: I had to find that maid and obtain information from her. The alpha was clearly hiding something, but he was too sharp for me to obtain any information from him. Amanda was my best option, and even if I didn’t like what I was about to do, it was what had to be done. I didn’t want to hurt her, so I will try not to, but I may need to get her hopes up so she would give me a name. Joseph and I stayed in different rooms while Chase stayed with me. I didn’t want him out of sight. He wasn’t stupid, but they may think he was naive because of his age. Now, if you add the fact that he belongs to the king’s pack, then he could become the main target of several she-wolves. I had to remind myself that Ivy wouldn’t have sent him if she didn’t trust him. Still, I didn’t want to disappoint her. It wasn’t just because I felt like I owed her, but because I knew she sent me here because she trusted me (somehow), and I didn’t want to break that trust she had given me. Furthermore, something told me that she would beat the s**t out of me if I messed this up. The weather wasn’t something that I enjoyed, to be honest, so I decided to take a hot shower before waking Chase up. I didn’t want to deal with him so early in the morning, so I asked Joseph to come later. That way, he could get more sleep. I slept in the car, so I wasn’t so tired, but they didn’t. Once I was clean and didn’t feel chilly anymore, I got out of the bathroom, only to see Chase sitting on his bed while he tried to stay awake. I wanted to laugh as I saw his head move from side to side, but instead, I threw my towel at him. I needed him to wake up. We had a lot to discuss. “Hey, man! What the f**k?” He exclaimed and glared at me as if I were his older brother instead of an Alpha. He really had the attitude of a boy. We did have an age gap of six years, so it was understandable. “Rise and shine; we need to come up with a plan,” I replied. He huffed and went into the bathroom while I told Joseph to come to the room. I waited until he arrived. My mind was going a hundred miles per hour. I needed answers, and I needed them fast. The fact that my mate was in the same area that I was in made me want to go into every room and every house that they had to see if she was there. A knock on the door made me come back to reality. Joseph had arrived, or so I thought, but the man standing on the other side of the door wasn’t my Beta. It was the Alpha with a freaking smug smile on his face. Please, Goddess, give me patience. "Now you understand what Kaid felt," Ares laughed. “Good morning, Alpha Alexander.” You would think he was being polite, but his tone said otherwise. “Good morning to you, too, Alpha Ronald. To what do I owe the pleasure of your visit?” He tried to get inside the room, which was something that I was not going to stand. We were in his pack, yes, but I was also an Alpha, and he couldn’t walk over me. “Chase is in the bathroom, so we can go somewhere else if you want to talk.” I closed the door behind me. It was a clear hint that I didn’t like him snooping around the room that was supposed to be mine. Just as we got out of the room, I saw Joseph coming. He didn’t look happy at all, so I guess he saw how the Alpha wanted to barge into my room. “Alpha Ronald.” The Alpha stiffened when he realized I would not go with him alone. “Beta Joseph, I just wanted to inform you that some events will occur during your stay. These events will increase interaction and, thus, the possibility of finding your mate. There is also a ball in the evening to welcome all our guests, so I hope you can join us.” “Of course, alpha, we will be there. After all, that is why we came, and I hope my mate also comes.” I saw how his body reacted, he was uncomfortable, my comment didn’t sit right with him. What was he hiding? Joseph and I didn’t say anything else; we opened the door to enter my room. I sighed as soon as we got in. I was beginning to get frustrated by all the secrecy and mystery surrounding my mate. It was ironic. I always knew where my first mate was, and I ignored her. Now I had to find my mate like it was a game of hide-n-seek, and I didn’t even know if she was safe. The Moon Goddess is certainly teaching me a lesson; this can't be coincidental. “Hey, Joseph!” Chase came out of the bathroom, oblivious to what happened while he was there. “What’s up with the faces?” He pointed at Joseph and me. “The Alpha came again. There is something wrong with this pack.” His demeanor changed in an instant. He didn’t look like the boy who had come with us. “I’ve noticed that as well. The maids talk, especially that girl, Amanda. She was over the hills, and she had found her mate, and it was an Alpha.” What? She never found her mate; that was a lie. “I didn’t correct her because I wanted to see what she did with that lie. Furthermore, I need you to take the necklace from her.” I lifted an eyebrow now. When did he come up with this plan? And why would a necklace be of any importance? I’m not a hound dog, so I can’t go around the pack trying to catch her scent. “What is the use of that? I already know my mate's scent.” He rolled his eyes at me like I had said the most stupid thing ever. “I don’t want to use her scent; I want Esmeralda to help us track her.” What? Could she do that? And how is she going to come? “I don’t think I understand your plan; I know nothing about witches, so just tell me what you need, and I will get it.” He gave me a short but concise list. I needed a map of the area, the necklace, and a candle. Yes, these are things that a typical guest could ask without lifting suspicions. Wonderful. The necklace I could get it, but the map I had no idea how to get my hands on something like that. My pack’s map is in a safe, and I suppose they take the same precautions. I couldn’t ask the alpha; he would not give it to me willingly. Well, I will think about how to get my hands on that, but first, I needed the necklace. I had to find Amanda. Fortunately, the house wasn’t big. I realized that there were only four floors. The biggest one was the first floor, where the office and common areas were. The second floor was where the guests slept. The third floor has more guest rooms, and the beta’s family also lived there. Thinking about it, I haven’t met the beta yet. The Alpha lived on the last floor. They didn’t have a gamma, which surprised me because even the smallest packs do. How did I get the information? Well, maids love to gossip, so I just glued the pieces together. I didn’t know how freely we could move around the house, but at least the first and second floors are meant for everybody, so it shouldn’t be a problem if I’m wandering around. I was near the living room when I saw her chestnut hair. Gotcha! “Hi Amanda, I was looking for you.” I tried to sound cheerful like I was dying to see her. “Oh? Hello Alpha. What can I help you with?” She was nervous. I could see that because she was playing with the broom, moving it side by side. “I wanted to talk with you. Could you give me a minute?” I haven’t flirted with anyone in my life. Women basically threw themselves at me, so I had no idea how. “Sure, Alpha. We can go outside if you want.” I smiled at her and gave her my hand so she could lead me. We went to the back garden, which was covered in snow, which meant it was freezing. I should have told her to talk inside. “Now, Alpha, what can I help you with?” She used a gentle tone, clearly trying to get my attention. Fuck, the cold is not letting me think properly. “I wanted to apologize once again. I may have gotten your hopes up, but that wasn’t my intention.” Her eyebrows furred, which is what I wanted. “I don’t want a mate for power, Alpha.” Of course, she didn’t; that was what they all said. “Oh no! I’m not implying that. I just want you to feel the mate bond. It is something wonderful that everyone should experience.” I caressed her cheek, making her blush. I took my hand away like I remembered that I couldn’t do that. “Yes, I wanted a mate alpha, but destiny was not meant for us.” She now grabbed my hand, and I had to admit, if I didn’t have a mate, I would have tried something in the past. But I had changed and knew that flings don’t bring anything good to your life. “Destiny can be changed, you know? Sometimes, a fated bond is not meant to be.” I was now looking at her lips, or at least I was making her think that. In reality, I was trying to see if she was wearing the necklace, but she wasn’t. f**k! Now, what do I do? She was leaning in; she wanted me to kiss her. Damn it. I am screwed!
