Chapter 6 Who had done it?

1305 Words
“Who are you?!” Suddenly seeing Amos breaking in, Alice had clenched the knife on the table and was ready to fight like hell, but to her surprise, this person just had called his foster mother “Mom”. Did that mean… At the thought of this, Alice turned to look at Flora wonderingly, and then she just saw her pale mother instantly burst into tears. “Oh my GOD! Amos! My son! You finally come back!” “Mom! It’s me! I’m home...” Amos had already sobbed. The great joy of the reunion of mother and son after six years of separation was self-evident, but from beginning to end, Alice never said a word to Amos, not to mention to smile at him at all. After some greetings, Amos’s attention was focused on the blood on the bed. He frowned and asked, “Mom, what’s with this blood stain? And you… you look so gaunt...” Six years of time changed Amos a lot. He was not that childish and impulsive boy anymore but turned into an undefeated king of the bloody battlefield. He had been too excited to notice the change in his mother, but when he calmed down, he found that there seemed to be too many problems in his mother. In addition, Alice's previous behaviors confirmed his guess that his mother must have suffered a lot in the six years since he had left. Hearing the words of Amos, Flora's face suddenly changed. “I’m fine, son. You just went home, take a good rest first. And then we can have a good talk. There’s so much more mom wants to ask you and tell you.” But Amos just lifted the quilt directly and found that Flora’s bandaged left leg was soaked with blood. Amos was simmering with rage! “Mom! Who did this?!” Amos’s voice was full of anger. Fortunately, being afraid to frighten his mom and little sister, Amos had forcibly withheld the murderous look which trying to rush out. Amos had never seen his father since he had born. There had been only he and his mother had been dependent on each other until he had been five years old. In that year, his mother had adopted Alice, and then the second important person of his life had shown up. To Amos, his mother was more important than his own life. If not so, at the outset, he wouldn’t have stabbed dead that human beast to save his mother. But at the moment, someone had hurt his mother again, which had touched Amos the inmost reverse scale! Flora heard the words that made her heart tremble. Because of her, her son had made a big mistake in that very year. After the absence of a trace for a full six years, she did not want to let her son who had just come back would meet with a mishap again. She hurriedly forced a smile “No one. My leg was broken a few days ago due to an accidental fall. It’s OK. Just some skin trauma.” And then she immediately transferred the topic. “Son, where have you been for all these years? Why haven’t you contact us? Do you know how worried mom is about you? I wouldn’t want to live if anything happened to you.” Looking at his mother’s eyes, Amos was very clear in mind that she had concealed the fact. But he didn’t say anything else more. Instead, he called the ambulance. Nothing was important to his mother right now. … When Amos and Alice worked together to help Flora up to the ambulance, Flora was full of anxiety. Going to the hospital was equal to spending a lot of money. Her life these years was very distressed, so there was no spare money for her to go to the hospital. “Amos, I’m really fine! There’s no need to go to the hospital. We can just apply for some medicine by ourselves and it’ll heal.” Looking at Flora’s anxious face, Amos was in pain. “Mom, I have money. Don’t worry about it.” Amos tried to appease Flora while observing Alice who was standing silently aside. Thoughtfully, he felt that his little sister seemed to be full of hostility to him. After the days of six years living in blood, even if someone tried to hide his hostility, he could feel clearly, let alone her undisguised resentment. It seemed that in the six years, a lot had happened. But it didn’t matter. Now he had come back, any problem can be solved. … When they got to the hospital, the first thing they did was to make films about the broken leg. The doctor said that the left leg suffered a comminuted fracture, and it had been several days. The operation should be done at once, otherwise, it was necessary to amputate the left leg. Hearing these words, Amos and Alice were all in a moment of fear. Without saying another word, Amos paid all the surgery fees immediately. At the outside of the surgical operating room, Amos glanced at Alice who was sitting beside and being in silence. “Alice, you have changed a lot during these years. I almost did not recognize you.” Alice raised her eyes and glanced at Amos, and then she lowered her head again and remained silent. Seeing this, Amos’s eyebrows knit in a frown. He then kept asking, “Tell me the truth. What happened to Mon’s leg? It can’t be hurt by herself.” Alice stared up blankly at her elder brother. At the moment, this man was no longer the boy who would take a lollipop to make her smile. That pair of abstruse eyes, she can’t see through what was in his mind. “A few days ago when mother was at work, she accidentally poured some coffee on a guest. And then, the man just broke her leg! And he also demanded us to pay for his clothes... He said he would burn down our house if we couldn’t pay for it...” Speaking of this, Alice could not help but sob in a low voice. Thinking of mother’s love and care in all these years and those people so fiercely who had hurt her, it felt as if a knife were piercing her heart. “What?!” Alice’s words had not finished, but Amos could not bear anymore. He stood up with a rush and clenched his fists with eyes flashing a flame of vengeance. The bleak and appalling momentum around him made Alice astounded and she carefully frowned. “Do you know where does mother work?” “Sunshine Coffee.” Alice replied subconsciously, but then she seemed to think of something and was surprised. “Please! Don’t mess around! Do you know that mom has been worried about you for what you have done? Just don’t lead to trouble again!” Amos who had already taken a step stood in situ because of astonishment. He had never expected Alice who was 15 would have said such words. With a wry smile, he turned and looked at Alice and said, “Remember, that incident was not a mistake. I can tolerate others insult me, but if anyone tries to hurt my family, I will let him pay the price!” After saying that, Amos strode and left the hospital.
