I leave the Johnson's house and stop for a moment. I look back and realize the generosity of them all. If it had been other people, they wouldn't have even let me set foot inside this house. However, they welcome me with affection, as always.
If I had accepted Annie that day, maybe now I wouldn't have to leave and leave my son here, but the three of us would go home. Imagining what my life would be like right now causes me a lot of pain. I let go of someone who did nothing but love me, even though all I ever offered her was heartbreak. Now I know why all those images of our time together come to mind. She offered me the best in life, and I despised it.
I see her and it is true what I said. She has always been a light for everyone, but I was about to dim her shine with my darkness.
