Chapter 09

SIANNA’S thoughts became even more tangled at the knowledge that the man she’d had a one-night stand with in a hotel had a child. To think she had slept with a married man—it made her feel no different from women who destroy families or relationships. What if that man’s wife found out he had been with someone else? She wished she had never seen him again. She had been ready to bury what happened between them at the hotel. But now that she knew he had a family, her stress only deepened. It made her realize even more that what happened that night had been a huge mistake. And she felt even more disgusted with the man who could still sleep with another woman despite already having a family. Were all men in this world really like that? Never content physically, even when the women they were with were loyal to them? Just like her excellent ex, Wil. She had been completely loyal to him despite the many men who courted her—men she ignored. She gave her whole heart and entire being to the man she was supposed to marry. But despite her loyalty, it still wasn’t enough. He looked for someone else. Another woman he could easily take to bed. Her anger toward men only intensified. It felt like they were all the same and none of them were decent. She was already at the lobby of the building where her condo unit was when she remembered the box she had been carrying earlier. Sianna cursed under her breath when she recalled that the man had placed her box inside his car’s trunk. And how was she supposed to get it back now? “DADDY NINONG, let’s go,” Migi called impatiently to Eliezer. He took one last look at the taxi driving away before turning to his godson and smiling. “Your timing is impressive, Migi,” he said, shaking his head before closing the passenger-side door and quickly circling to the driver’s seat. Once inside the car, Migi spoke again. “Who was that woman earlier? Is she your girlfriend, Daddy Ninong?” “No.” “Then why were you going to let her ride in your car?” “Sit properly back there,” he said instead. One thing he liked about the boy was how talkative he was. It kept him from getting bored. At first, he hadn’t really liked kids. Not until Migi came into the world. Maybe because he was Carlos’s son, he didn’t feel like a stranger to him. “Okay. I want ice cream,” Migi added. “There’s plenty at home.” Migi didn’t insist further and simply adjusted himself in his seat in the back. When they arrived at his house in an exclusive village, Carlos greeted them right away and took Migi from him. Eliezer, meanwhile, retrieved the box from the trunk. He shook his head as he carried it into his Study Room. Only there did he remove the lid to inspect what was inside. Typical office items. There was something specific he wanted to see, so he took the items out one by one. A notebook slipped from his hand and fell to the floor, along with some papers tucked inside it. He bent down to pick up the notebook. On the floor, he saw a torn photograph. A picture of a woman—the woman he had a one-night stand with. Someone had an arm around her shoulder, but he couldn’t see who it was because the photo had been torn down the middle. He picked up another piece of paper from the floor. It wasn’t just paper—it looked like the other half of the torn photograph. When he held it up, his forehead creased upon seeing his nephew, Wil. He straightened from where he had been crouching, walked to his swivel chair, and sat down. Then he placed the two torn pieces on the desk and aligned them. It was Wil with his arm around that woman. The frown didn’t leave his face as he stared at the photo in front of him. An idea began forming in his mind. He immediately called for Carlos through the intercom. It didn’t take long before Carlos entered the Study Room. “You sent for me?” “Carlos, find out who Wil’s ex-fiancée is. I also need her picture. ASAP.” “Give me a few minutes, Sir Eliezer,” Carlos replied before leaving the office. “Is that really how men are? You don’t think about the partner you’ll hurt? You’re all the same…” Eliezer remembered the woman’s words earlier when he was alone again. He took a deep breath. Then he stood up once more and continued going through the contents of the box—until he found the name he was looking for. “Sianna Melendrez…” he read from a document. Something seemed to echo in his ears when he read that name. Right. That was the name he had heard as his nephew’s girlfriend. He had never seen Wil’s partner because he had been too busy, but he was well aware of how proudly Wil talked about her. He used to describe his girlfriend as wife material. That was why he had proposed to her. But in the end, Wil would be marrying another woman—the one he had gotten pregnant. Eliezer shook his head. It wasn’t long before Carlos returned with the information he needed. “Sianna Melendrez is the name of your nephew’s ex-fiancée, Sir Eliezer.” “What else do you know about Wil’s ex?” Eliezer asked as he sat back down in his swivel chair. “She was terminated from her job.” Eliezer glanced at the box on top of his desk. “Do you know why?” “That was what the company owner wanted.” “No other reason?” “The owner of that company will be one of the principal sponsors at Wil’s wedding—to Sianna’s stepsister. They might be involved.” “Okay. Thank you,” he said to Carlos. Carlos then showed him a photograph. A photo of Sianna. “That’s her, Sir Eliezer.” Eliezer swallowed discreetly as he studied Sianna’s picture more closely. “I’ll go back to Migi,” Carlos excused himself. “Alright.” Once alone again, Eliezer stared at the torn photograph still on his desk. Wife material… he repeated in his mind, recalling how Wil used to describe his former girlfriend. When his gaze shifted to Sianna’s photo, the memory of the night their bodies had been alone together resurfaced. That heated moment… She was still a virgin. That much had been clear to him. He was certain that even in her relationship with Wil, she had guarded herself. But in her drunken state, she had given him her virginity unexpectedly. And he still didn’t know why she had ended up inside his hotel suite. Had she entered the wrong suite that night because she was drunk? He also couldn’t help thinking that perhaps Wil got another woman pregnant because, as a man, he had needs that Sianna hadn’t been able to fulfill. A rare kind of woman—someone who intended to give herself for the first time to a man on their wedding day. Something that never happened. But was that enough reason for Wil to cheat, simply because he had needs as a man? Especially when he had already been committed to a woman he was supposed to marry? He felt irritation toward his nephew for wasting a woman like that. And out of all the women in the world, Wil had to get involved with Sianna’s stepsister. Unless, of course, that had been the stepsister’s plan all along—to take Wil for herself. In an instant, Sianna Melendrez became far more interesting to him.
