Sitting next to Damien and his crew was the very worst part of my day. Damien would stretch his long legs occasionally, moving my seat. He had even tugged on my hair one time when Mr will, the teacher, turned around to write something.
"Are you really ignoring me?" Damien asked when I did not pay him any attention despite all his stunts.
"Even a toddler would get that part...please leave me alone," I whispered harshly, without looking back.
I looked at Zac, he had not even spared me so much as a glance after I took my seat. The last time we spoke, he had left upset and I figured he was probably still upset now, that would explain his indifference towards me and I made a mental note to talk to him later.
The sound of the seat scrapping the floor harshly drew the teacher's attention to us. Damien had kicked my seat again. I closed my eyes wishing I had powers, any powers that would just get me out of the situation.
"Is there a problem Debrah?" the teacher paused to ask.
"None at all Mr. Will," I forced a smile.
"Then please I would ask that you comport yourself accordingly and stop distracting my class with your chair," he said harshly and turned back to the book in his hand.
I sighed in frustration as snickers filled the air around me. It was only my second class and I was hating this day already. About a minute later, the door burst open and a tall, beautiful girl with unblemished skin and brown curly hair walked in. Just like the others, more make-up than James Charles and carrying an expensive branded bag. She reminded me of a less hot version of Kyle Jenner.
"Late Again Bella," Mr. Will said with a scowl, arms folded as he watched the girl stroll in like she was on a red carpet.
"I had to get my liner in shape," she fluttered her lashes and I rolled my eyes at her silly excuse.
"Just get a seat would you." he stretched his hand out, a great contrast to the reaction he gave me for coming just a few minutes late.
"I was going to even if you didn't ask," the girl flipped her hair and walked over to where I sat. "Hey missy, mind getting your ass off? You're in my space."
"Language Bella," Mr. Will chastised lazily.
"What? I said mass," she rolled her eyes and snapped her perfectly pedicured nails in my face, "up and out...now."
"I was here first," I said defensively. There was no way I was about to give my seat up for her. "Find somewhere else..."
I turned back to my book, expecting her to leave, instead, she banged her fist on my table and yelled, "I don't think you heard me, this right here is my space, so I'm asking for the very last time. Move."
I half expected Mr will to do or at least say something, but instead, he just regarded me with brows raised as did everyone else. Except Zac. "I can not even learn peacefully," He slammed his book on the table and got to his feet. "I need to go to the nurse, I have a headache."
"You do not need to go to the nurse Zachery," Mr. Will said tiredly.
"Yes I do." he shot back and walked past him, "and ugly you might want to take my seat. That's Bella's space."
"Who's ugly?" Mr. Will asked in confusion.
"Is it that hard to tell?" Aaron yelled from behind and the class exploded in an uproar of laughter.
Feeling more than embarrassed enough, I moved to Zac's seat without a word. "Finally the pimp found her place," Bella took her sat and scoffed, "who even let that weirdo in here anyway?"
"You sound more stupid when you try to be smart Bella," Damien said bluntly, "so do us all a favor and put a rein on your mouth."
"Hey baby," she grinned at him despite his obvious spite for her, "I missed you, how was your weekend?"
"Jesus, can you all behave while I try to teach you?!" Mr. Will barked. I could see that he was losing his cool now.
"It's illegal to yell at high school students Mr. William," Bella said with a demure smile. There were already so many I did not like already and it was just the second class for the day.
"Lt's just get back into what's on the board please." Mr. Will looked like one of those teachers that hated his job, but I could not sympathize with him, not after his reaction to my little mistake this morning.
At least one good resulted from Bella's presence, I was away from Damien and he did not look too pleased about it. I looked to my side and saw the first girl I had met here. She eyed me with an apologetic smile, one I happily returned, Finally one person I did not dislike.
I dashed in and out of class for the next few hours, trying to keep up with my schedule until the bell went off for a break. Sighing in relief, I picked up my books and headed out of the history class ready to take a minute to catch my breath. I only had some time, before I would delve back into the mad rush of trying to keep up with intermediate classes, new faces, a lot of bitches, and teachers who did not seem to like their students or jobs a lot. It was not hard to see why the lot of them were rotten, self-entitled, arrogant, rude brats with no regard for a higher authority, and seeing as the students belonged to an elite class in the society, most teachers had their hands tied and could not really do a thing about the bad behavior.
I was wrong when I said I could cope here. It was going to be a little close to hell, with arrogant students and teachers who looked like they were terrified to even correct the students.
As I approached my locker, the familiar sight of Zac made me smile. For some reason, I was happy to see him.
But that was not supposed to see him. I was supposed to hate him like the others.
"Hey," I said, opening my locker. I gasped when I realized our lockers were just next to each other. "Oh my, we're locker neighbors."
"Yay," he said flatly and dumped his books in.
He was still in a bad mood. He was always in a bad mood. "I know you didn't really have a headache back at the science class," I started carefully, "so um, thanks for letting me have your seat, but you..."
"Didn't have to?" he completed with a scoff, "do not delude your self into thinking I did that for you. I know how well you can take care of yourself," he banged the locker door shut, "I still have a headache so leave me alone."
For the last few weeks, he had been the one coming to me, so why was he being so mean again? I guess I misjudged him or maybe it was about the last time we spoke. "Hey I know you're still mad about how our last conversation ended, so I want to apologize, I did not mean any of those things I said, and I appreciate..."
"Which conversation?" he asked like I was making stuff up.
"At the ice cream shop?"
"Are you making things up just to keep talking to me?" he said harshly.
"No, what of course not. Okay, I know you're mad about it, but there's no need to be so mean to me now," I frowned.
"I have better thing to consume my time Debrah." he sighed and shoved his hand in his perfectly fit uniform pants, "I don't remember speaking to you, why would I even speak to you?"
Hurt and anger coursed through me at his denial. I wondered why I fooled myself into believing he was nicer. He was just a jerk like the others. "Whatever, I don't care anyway." I turned around and started shoving my books in my locker.
I could feel him standing behind me, watching me and when I turned back he looked away sharply, "want something?" I asked sternly.
"Nah, just stay out of trouble since you're new here. I cannot always be saving you." the audacity.
"Like I'm actually begging to save me," I scoffed, "in fact, I do the very opposite all the time. Do not interfere in my life, I can take care of myself."
"I'm sure you can," his jaw ticked and without a word more, he turned and left.
I rolled my eyes as he disappeared down the hallways. Such a jerk. I took out my backpack ready to explore the school grounds a little when it hit me that I still had Zac's phone on me. I did not want to have anything that belonged to either Damien or his friends, so I took the phone from my bag, slipped my sim out of it, and locked my locker. I raced in the direction Zac had gone hoping to find him somewhere around.
It was not hard to find him in the jampacked hallways filled with students making their way to and fro, unlike most of the students, Zac was tall, really tall, with dark brown hair and well a very handsome face, chiseled jaws, and all the blah blah blah's that many females loved to fawn over. Unlike Damien though, he was always upset. Damien was moire mischievous, taking pride in ruining the day for everyone. Damien was the one who would always seek out trouble by bullying weaker people, and Zac did not exactly seek out trouble but on most days he watched quietly as Damien bullied others. He was not exactly bad, but he was not a good human either seeing as he never cared to stop his friends.
Most people feared him, even though I was sure up to half of them also had a huge crush on him.
"Zac!"I picked up my pace running after him. He was headed for the cafeteria, and he could not hear me. "Wait up Zachery!"
He's still could not hear me. I raced faster, determined to catch up with him, and my mind was so occupied with reaching him that I did not bother to remember Damien's warning this morning, "...for your sake don't come to the cafeteria today..."
I realized too late as I reahed the door of the cafeteria, but I was already a step past the door. I forced myself to a halt, only to trip over someone's leg and fall face down right in the middle of the cafeteria.
There was a deafening silence for the next few seconds as I tried to recover from the fall. My hands and legs hurt and my head was pounding. With a soft groan, I tried to push myself off the ground, but it was hard, I had probably sprained something. I raised my head to take a peek around, a few people were staring, a few were chuckling, some had their phones out and Damien was leaning across the counter, watching me with a satisfied smirk along with the other three. Zac would not even spare a glance my way.
And just when I thought I had gotten the most humiliating first day at a new school ever, Damien snapped his fingers at someone clearly behind me, and just like that a bucket full of something sticky—maybe tomato sauce or eggs—was unloaded on my hair and body, so hard it completely covered me in a thick, goo-like mess.
All around me, I could hear everyone erupt into mocking laughs and I did not bother to look up. All I could feel was anger, humiliation, and the strong wish that I could just disappear, maybe to another planet or universe completely.
Damien's voice filtered through my brain and I could tell he was leaning next to me even if I could not see him. His voice dripped with satisfaction and amusement:
"This is just a tip of the iceberg for anyone that f***s with me."
