It was my first day at Rock high Academy. I gave myself a good glance in the mirror, wishing Dalia had considered my request to lengthen the skirt at east below my thighs. I missed the regular pants I use to wear to my old school. I held the hem of the skirt, pushing it lower, but realized soon that it was a bad idea as it made my shirt slack out. With a sigh, I ran my hand over my braided hair. I was going to a new school with possibly snobbish self-entitled kids like Damien, I had to look like them too. Don't get me wrong, I was not suddenly changing my personality because I was changing schools, but in my old school, I stood out a whole lot, and I realized too late that it was better to fit in than to be singled out and that was what I was going to do here. Fit in, stay away from as much trouble as I possibly could, stay away from Damien and his friends too—thankfully we were not in the same grade— even better act like I did not know them. That was how I planned my life for the next two years I would be going to high school there. Stay woven among the lot so you don't get picked on, then graduate quietly and end the story. I had finished my chores for Damien this morning, making sure to lay his uniform out, polish his shoes, even pick out his books for school. Things had been really calm and eerily normal between us since I emptied the milk bottle all over him the other day, but I did not delude myself into thinking that he had learned his lesson, and he was not going to leave me be, I knew too well he was cooking something in that brain of his and the thought of what he was going too next scared me to my insides. "You look uh-ma-zing" Georgia squealed as I walked downstairs for an apple. "I look ridiculous." I adjusted my skirt, holding my hand over my back thigh as I leaned lower to take an apple. "If you pull it off with such an attitude of course you would look ridiculous," she shrugged, "girl you could be wearing a burlap sack, but with the right attitude, you make everyone else thinking you are wearing the damn sexiest outfit in the room." she tipped her head higher for emphasis. Apart from the fact that she also drolled over Damien, I liked her already. "Thanks for the pep talk Georgia, but I'm trying to look like a student not a slutty girl," I said drily straightening as I found what I was searching for. "I already feel nervous about starting this new school, and now I have to deal with the self-consciousness that comes with this skirt." "No one would even notice, I assure you, girls, at RHA, do be crazy, you would be surprised to find someone wearing a skirt half the length of yours." I shook my head as an image of what a disaster would be flashed in my brain. "I don't even want to think about it. Also, how do you know about the girls there, did you go there?" "Nope, but I think every girl in that school had come to this house at least once," her voice dripped with disgust, "it's always one shameless b***h throwing herself at Damien in the disguise of needing some help with hos homework or another with a pathetic excuse of 'wanting to chek in him' Like girl your not a doctor and he's not sick go home." I chuckled at the plain jealousy written on his face and dripping from her tone. "'I still wonder what you all see in him." "See in who?" Mr. David's voice boomed from the doorway. Georgia and I straightened immediately and said a greeting to him as he strode in. I thought he had left. I sure hoped he had. "Ah...Good Morning." Thankfully he did not question further who we were talking about. He took a seat on the counter and ordered Georgia to make him some tea. She obeyed silently, mouthing a bit of good luck to me before hurrying to fix him a cup. He turned to me as I made a move to leave, "I see you no longer have that grumpy face anymore...Deborah right?" he said, trying to remember my name. "Debrah..." "The same thing," he frowned, clearly just like his son he did not like being corrected, "so how's it going working for my son?" "Amazing," I said with a toothed smile. "You see I told you it would not be so bad after all." "I'm loving every minute of my job here, thank you for the opportunity." another lie. "You're most welcome dear. Dalia said it was your first day at school." he ited. "It is," my face beamed with joy at the change of topics. "I'm really excited." "That's great. I love seeing kids enthusiastic about school. I'm sure you would do great, you look like a smart girl." I could not tell if he was just buttering me up or if he meant it, so I just nodded thanks. I looked at the time on my watch, "It's my first day, I should get going." "How are you getting to school?" he asked as Georgia dropped his cup in front of him and went off to busy herself at the counter. "The bus," was how I always got to school. "You mean that congested space with all of those people who carry different germs around?" he sipped his tea in disgust. "I always take the bus on my way to school," I explained, working to hold back a frown. "Not anymore, you might make someone sick if you catch something." before I could protest, he added, "you will go with Damien in his car from now on." "Oh I appreciate your offer sir, but I'm really fine. I can always find a way..." He chuckles and got to his feet. "Who said it was an offer? I'm away at work most days, I would hate to have to rush home because you have infected someone here with one of those diseases. Especially since you work with my only son." he dug his hand in his pocket and took out a wad of notes, then pushed them to me. "that's for good luck on your first day." Of course, I mean you did not just ruin my day by making me go with Damien to school every day. "Thank you, Mr. David, but I'll pass." He shook his head, "you still do not understand thaat nobody in this house says no to me Debrah." at least he got my name right this time. He moved closer and shoved the wad into my hand, "I hope you learn that soon. Have a great day." he turned to Georgia, "you're getting better at your tea, but I hate to remind you again that I do not take sugar in my tea." She gave a small nod, followed by an apology before he turned to leave. "Is he always an asshole?" I asked when he was out of earshot. "On most days. Yeah" she sighed, cleaning out the table, he only took a sip of the tea, and now she had to discard it. Like father like son. I looked at the cash in my hands, "I cannot accept this cash, it's too much," it was comfortably twice what I received in a paycheck per month. "If you're going to make it in that school, trust me you need more," she said flatly. "Why?" "When you get there, you would understand. For now, I think Damien just walked past the front door. You should get going." "I'll see you around later," I rushed through the door, barely making it to the front door before Damien slipped out. "Wait for me," I raced to catch up with him, but he did not do so much as acknowledge my presence. "Always pestering me," he growled looking straight ahead and not stopping until he got to his car. It was like those sports cars, like those in the movies. Black and spotless, with the roof, rolled back. The car was enough encouragement for anyone to drool at him. "If you have a crush on me, I'll make it clear now, you are not my type." "Always too full of yourself." I snorted at his assumption that I had a crush on him. It was funny because on most days I only felt disgusted for him. "I need to come with you in your car to school." He chuckled, "why would I even want to soil my car with your presence? It's reserved for pretty and sexy girls only." he eyed me from my hair to my feet "and you are anything ut beautiful or sexy." I did not bother to tell him that I was not the most thrilled to be around him more than was necessary. "Well it's was your dad's orders, according to him taking the bus to school might make me infect you with something dangerous." I folded my arms across my chest. "I don't care, crawl to school if you have to you are not coming with me in my car, you'll scare the hot girls away," he opened his door and climbed in. "Okay," I shrugged, turning around, "I heard there's a new flu in the air anyway, I'm sure you wouldn't mind taking it from me" He caught the back of my collar before I made it two steps forward, easily pulling me to the spot where I stood a second ago. "You're joking about the flu." "I mean you could let me go on the bus today so we could find out yourself," the dumbass was actually buying my story, "I hear people die from the flu." "Shut up and get in." he slammed his bag against me. "Why are you giving me your bag?" "You're going to be occupying its seat, so you have to carry it all the way until I get to school." "You can just put it in the trunk," "Funny," his lips twitched but he did not laugh, "get in before I change my mind." It was a few minute's drives down to Rock High Academy. I half expected him to bring up the incident about the spilled milk, but he didn't so I did. "You don't look mad about what happened in your game room the other day," I said casually. "If you're curious about how I intend to make you pay, don't worry too much and for your sake don't come to the cafeteria today," he said with a gling to evil in his eyes and a matching smirk. "Is that supposed to be a threat?' He shrugged and focused on the school's parking lot. It was a large space filled with more brands of flashy cars than I cared to know. All I knew was they were all shiny and new and not supposed to be in a parking lot for kids in high school. Damien parked between Mercedes and Bentley and suddenly I felt terribly out of place and I had not even stepped through the glass doors of the school I could see up ahead. This was going to be much harder than I thought. "Thanks for the drive," I mumbled, trying to open the door, it looked complex and I was clueless at what button to push. "First off, I did not do it out of the kindness of my heart, so do not thank me, secondly," he leaned over me and I watched in horror as he brought his face within inches of mine. "What are you doing?" I eyed him suspiciously, shifting away from him, there was no more room, so I was left coming face to face with him. It was almost as if we were having an eskimo kiss and the scent of his minty breath lingered in the air. My heart thumped loudly in my chest as I wondered what he was about to do. I placed my hand on his chest in an attempt to push him back, but he held it back, leaning closer, so close that I could see the faintest trace of gold in his piercing dark green eyes. "Damien...?" I struggled to say, confused t his sudden behavior, but unable to pull away. It was like I was spellbound, fixed in place until the sliding of the door caught my attention. I looked to see his fingers digging into one of the buttons next to me as the doors slid upwards. "That's how you open the door," he pulled back abruptly and I suddenly felt like I had been cast out of whatever trance he had me in two seconds ago. I cleared my throat softly, shaking my head and trying to regain composure. What the hell just happened? "Don't tell me you thought I was going to kiss you," he smirked, knowing that was exactly what I thought. "More like terrified you were going to infect my lips with you rotten lips." In all honesty, his lips were...well sexy, but I was not about to tell the asshole that. I rolled my eyes scornfully. His loud mocking laugh rang through the car as I pushed his bag to him and climbed out. "It's not funny," "Just get out of here dork," Without a word, I spun on my heels, hands in a tight fist as I tried to think of good thoughts to start my first day. I had made a few timid steps forward before the honking sound of Damien's car filed the parking lot. More than a dozen pairs of eyes turned to me as he called, "Hey Dork!" from far down the parking lot. I ignored him, making my way away in quick steps, but not before he added in a mocking tone, "have a great first day today." So much for staying unnoticed. Well happy first day to me.
