A week ago, I’d helped a stranger pay a three-dollar bill. In return, she’d given me a job... and a three-hundred-dollar tip that had nearly made me cry right there in her diner.
The first thing I’d done was buy the textbooks I’d been putting off all semester. After that, I sent extra money home for my mom’s medication.
And now? Now I was standing behind the counter in a grey shirt and black pants, an order pad in one hand and a pen in the other, smiling so much my cheeks hurt.
