Caris lay on her side of the bed and stared at the wall. Malachi had been gone for several hours, the sun was setting, and she was licking her wounds. The longer he’d stayed away, the more the words he’d spoken to her resonated in her mind. Not once had he raised his voice or yelled at her the way she had today. He had been honest and forthright and, she admitted, absolutely correct. She was terrified, perhaps this time, she’d gone too far and had chased him away for good. The sound of the dogs bounding up the stairs caught her ear and the slow, steady tread of Malachi’s footsteps following made her heart pound. She was a lawyer. Conflict was in her blood.
