Caris sat at a table in the coffee shop with her mother and Maris, Thursday morning. Maris was chatting their ears off a mile a minute and Caris had to acknowledge just over ten days away from her father had created a brand-new woman. Gone was the sullen, despondent wallflower who would bend and capitulate to anyone’s demands and in its place was a vibrant woman whose confidence was blossoming. “Mackenna told me they found Mom and I an apartment already. It’s in the same building as her best friend’s condo. It’s in the center of the city and walking distance to everything.” She continued speaking excitedly and Caris cast a glance at their mother to see how she was faring. Her mom had dark smudges under her eyes even her perfectly executed concealer couldn’t hide and her mouth was drawn.
