“I would like to see him,” Lyra said to Nile. “Of course,” Nile said, leading the way back into the cell. “You'll find that I keep my promises. He is still alive.” Seconds later, Lyra realised that Julian was barely alive. He looked so bad, it was a wonder he was awake and talking. “Lyra,” he wheezed. One of his hands was clutching his side, just below his chest. Recalling the thud and groans she had heard, Lyra wondered whether Nile had just hit him. Julian looked weak, and the wound looked worse than it had the previous night. If he went another day without treatment, he would surely die. A day might even be a stretch.
