The following week was the longest of Betty’s life. Every hour in the hospital felt like three. By the time her grandfather was finally cleared to go home, his strength had returned enough for him to joke with the nurses and complain about the lack of salt in the food. Betty smiled for him. She stayed by his side, fluffing his pillows and double checking his discharge papers. She made sure he took his pills on time and stayed off his feet. What she did not do was look for Grayson.
