I woke to the hum of rain against the glass, the kind of weather that blurs everything beyond the window. From the streets, the skyline and even the sense of time passing.
My laptop was still open on the desk, the glow of an unread email lighting up the dark apartment. I didn’t know why I hesitated before clicking it, maybe some instinct warning me that the message would change something I wasn’t ready to admit was already gone.
I opened it and the words were simple, the kind of HR announcement that never carries the weight of the lives it affects.
