Feeling a Sense of Something Strange

1155 Words
Serena was very careful to get up quietly early in the morning, not wanting to disturb her mother or sisters who could be extremely irritable in the morning. When she made her way into the kitchen, Serena halted in dismay. Dishes were littered all over the bench, crumbs on the floor and half eaten food still on plates. Would it have killed them to clean up after themselves? With a sigh she began to scrub the dishes and swept the floor. Pancakes were made and freshly squeezed juice which she left on the counter complete with utensils and all the condiments she could think of. Serena would eat later, never really being hungry first thing in the morning. Instead she grabbed her cloak and rushed out the door, closing the door softly behind her.  Aaah she smiled. The cold air felt refreshing on her skin, the sun bright in the sky as birds chirped happily from their perches. This was Serena's favourite part of the day. She could take her time walking through the woods, no thinking about her chores or needing to rush back to do anything. Here she could just take in the beautiful scenery and relax. The only part of the day where no one was ordering her around or yelling at her for doing something they considered wrong. She was just Serena for a time and it felt great. She giggled as a rabbit came bounding out in front of her, darting away in fright when it spotted her. Serena watched it go, hoping it wouldn't be caught by another animal and eaten. She could see some plants that looked like herbs nearby and with a grin she inched closer, putting her face close and eyeing the leaves closely. Serena still remembered the time she had gotten some plants mixed up and accidentally pulled out stinging nettle. Her mother had thought it was highly amusing but Serena had been laid up for a week while her cuts healed, her magic still dormant at the time.  Slowly she pulled out the herbs and sniffed it eagerly. Mint. It smelt heavenly to Serena who put some in her pocket. She would use this for cooking but it was also something she used in her moisturising lotion. She was about to turn back when the most chilling bloodcurdling howl came from nearby. To Serena it sounded like an animal in distress and she quietly made her way towards the sound, not wanting to distress the poor thing any further or put herself in danger.  A large black and white wolf was whimpering, it's leg caught in a bear trap as Serena eyed it cautiously. This was no ordinary wolf that was for sure, most probably a shifter. If that was the case it may not let her help it. For some unfathomable reason shifter's hated witches, her mother had drilled that into her head since she was little. Would it bite her if she tried to help it? Serena couldn't take the sounds it was making, her heart twisting at the whimpers as it tried to spring its leg out of the trap. Shifter or not the poor thing was in pain and she was too soft hearted to leave it. Quietly she knelt nearby.  "You are hurt" she said quietly as its ears pricked up and it looked at her warily "I can help you if you let me. I mean you no harm" Serena assured it as she crawled a little nearer, the wolf sniffing the air and putting its head on its paws. Encouraged Serena moved to the trap.  "I can only force it open for a moment but that should be enough time for you to pull your leg out." Serena was calm, knowing if it was a shifter it would understand everything she was saying.  "Ok" Serena whispered "one, two, three" she grunted, muscles straining as she forced the trap open, the wolf instantly pulling its leg out as it clamped shut again.  Serena sat down with a groan. That had taken more strength than she thought it would. But at least the poor creature was free now. To her surprise the wolf stood and hesitated, whining when it tried to put its foot down and limping over to her.  Serena glanced down at it's leg, deep gouges in it where the trap had dug in, blood trailing down.  "Poor thing" she murmured.  Without hesitating she placed a gentle hand on its leg and closed her eyes as she summoned her magic, warm white light pooling beneath her hand. She let it trail down into the wolf's leg, healing it's wound as the wolf looked down in astonishment.  Once the leg was taken care of, Serena pulled her hand away and smiled sweetly at the shifter.  "I know you are a shifter" she said quietly "and that most probably would have healed within a few minutes but I can't bear to see anyone in pain." The wolf whined and put it's head on her shoulder as she laughed and patted it's snout gently. It's fur was so soft and silky, she longed to pat it and cuddle it, feeling an immense sense of love and caring towards it despite never having seen this wolf before.  "Serena" a voice screeched, so loud that birds took flight in fear, other animals disappearing into their burrows. The wolf pricked it's ears up and looked at her questioningly. "My sister Stella" Serena said with a grimace, standing up awkwardly and dusting off her dress the best she could.  "Serena" the voice screamed as Serena covered her ears. Her sister's voice was so piercing and shrill it hurt her ears to even listen to it.  "I have to go" Serena said reluctantly, wanting nothing more than to go with the wolf who had turned and was looking over it's shoulder.  "Well my chores await" Serena sighed turning away and giving a wave goodbye to the wolf who began to steadily make its way in the opposite direction. Well now what do you think? Our mate is a witch but her magic is white Xavier. Not only that but she healed us without even hesitating. She's a nice girl, can't you see that? Give her a chance please, instead of dismissing her due to your other experiences.  Xavier was thoughtful. The woman, Serena had been kind, her magic warm and soothing as it had healed him. Not only that but her voice had been gentle and she had helped him even knowing he was a shifter.. Maybe there was more than met the eye when it came to the witch. He would hold judgement for now and observe her from a distance. Shadow was correct, he would give her a chance, but at the start of anything shady and he wouldn't hesitate to reject her or even kill her if it came down to it.
