The roasted chicken lay forgotten on my plate while I enjoyed Kaelan's arms around me. I dozed off suddenly and when I opened my eyes, Kaelan sat on the chair and opened the plate. As soon as he took the chicken, I rushed forward.
"Kaelan, don’t!" I yelled..
He froze, startled by my outburst. I slapped the fork out of his hand, and the chicken tumbled to the ground.
"What the hell, Everly?" His tone was sharp, but he looked worried.
"It’s poisoned," I whispered, my voice trembling.
Kaelan’s eyes darkened instantly. I gazed at his face and saw his expression shifting from confusion to raw fury. "Poisoned?"
I nodded, picking up the chicken with a napkin. "I tasted it. It’s wolfsbane."
