Chapter 130

✨The Day He Chose✨ Elena Vale Elena didn’t trust Ari when he said, “Comfortable.” Comfortable for him could mean a private jet. Or a boardroom. Or a warehouse with men who looked like they didn’t blink. Still, she changed. She chose high-waisted jeans, a soft cashmere sweater, and Nike Zoom Vomero 5 sneakers. Simple. Easy. Her hair fell loose over her shoulders, and she kept her makeup minimal. When she stepped back into the living room, Ari was watching the skyline like he owned it. He turned when he heard her. His gaze dragged over her slowly — appreciative, steady. “Good,” he said. “Good?” she repeated. “That’s all I get?” “You look beautiful,” he amended calmly. “But you already know that.” She rolled her eyes, but warmth bloomed in her chest. “Where are we going?” “You’ll see.” ... He drove this time — no driver, no security tailing them visibly. Just the two of them in his black Aston Martin, city streets giving way to quieter roads. Elena noticed when the buildings thinned. “Ari,” she said slowly. “Where are we?” “Patience.” He reached for her hand at a red light, brushing his thumb across her knuckles like he always did when he was thinking too much. She had felt the shift in him too. Less guarded. Not softer — Ari would never be soft — but more deliberate. With her. The car eventually turned into a long, tree-lined drive. Ahead stood a low modern structure of glass and stone overlooking the water. She blinked. “What is this?” He parked but didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped out and came around to open her door himself. Suspicious. “You rented this?” she asked. “For the day.” The air smelled like salt and pine. Waves rolled gently against rocks below the property. It was secluded but not isolated — peaceful without feeling hidden. “Why?” she asked quietly. He stopped in front of her. “Eleven months ago you walked away from me.” She smiled faintly. “You were arrogant.” “I am arrogant.” “You were worse.” A corner of his mouth lifted. “I remember every second of that night,” he said. “The way you looked at me. Like you weren’t impressed.” “I wasn’t.” “That’s why I noticed you.” Her heart skipped — not because of the words, but because of how calmly he said them. They walked inside. The house was open and sunlit, minimalist but warm. A long dining table had been set near the windows. Outside on the deck, she could see what looked like a small picnic arrangement already prepared. “You planned this,” she murmured. “Yes.” “For how long?” “Since last week.” That was Ari. He didn’t do spontaneous sentiment. He strategized it. She walked toward the windows, taking in the view. The ocean stretched endlessly, sunlight glinting off its surface. “It’s beautiful,” she whispered. He came up behind her, not touching yet. Just close enough for her to feel the heat of him. “You work too much,” he said. “So do you.” “I didn’t say I was fixing myself today.” She turned to face him. “You’re impossible.” “And you love it.” She did. That was the dangerous part. ... They spent the afternoon without schedules. They ate on the deck, legs stretched out beneath the table, arguing lightly over politics the way they always did. She challenged him. He enjoyed it. He listened to her. Really listened. At one point he took her phone from her when she tried to check emails. “Elena.” “It’ll take two minutes.” “No.” He set it face down and slid it out of reach. “You’re very controlling today,” she said, narrowing her eyes. “Today is mine.” “And what does that mean exactly?” “It means you don’t carry anything for a few hours. No expectations. No pressure.” She stared at him. That wasn’t about possession. That was about relief. They walked along the private stretch of shoreline later, shoes in hand, cold water rushing over their feet. The wind tangled her hair and pushed his jacket open. She laughed when he tried to pull her away from a larger wave and failed, both of them splashed mid-calf. He looked younger like this. Less like the man who commanded rooms. More like the one who had shown her a picture of a small dog named Paw hanging in his childhood home. When they settled on a blanket near the dunes, she lay back, staring up at the endless blue sky. “You’ve been quiet,” he said. “I’m thinking.” “Dangerous.” She smiled faintly. “You remember everything?” “Yes.” “Even the stupid things I say?” “Especially those.” She propped herself on one elbow, studying him. “Why does eleven months matter to you so much?” His jaw flexed slightly — not discomfort, but consideration. “Because I don’t do temporary.” The words were simple. Heavy. She searched his face for irony. Found none. “Ari…” He held her gaze. Steady. Unwavering. “I don’t invest in things that won’t last.” Her breath caught slightly. Eleven months ago, she had assumed he was a storm she would survive. Now she wasn’t so sure she wanted to. She leaned forward and kissed him — slow, deliberate, tasting salt and sunlight. He responded immediately, one hand cradling the back of her neck, the other steady at her waist. The kiss deepened, unhurried, charged not with urgency but with certainty. When they finally pulled apart, her forehead rested against his. “You scare me sometimes,” she admitted softly. “Why?” “Because you’re serious.” “I am.” She swallowed. “And you don’t walk away from things.” “No,” he agreed quietly. “I don’t.” The wind moved around them, carrying the scent of the ocean. Eleven months ago she had walked away first. Now she was the one leaning closer. Now she was the one choosing to stay. And as she looked at him — really looked at him — Elena realized something steady and undeniable: This wasn’t infatuation. It wasn’t convenience. It wasn’t adrenaline. It was building into something far more permanent. And for the first time in her life, permanence didn’t feel like a cage. It felt like standing at the edge of something vast and knowing she wasn’t alone. She intertwined her fingers with his again. “Okay,” she said softly. “Okay?” he echoed. “I’m not walking away this time.” His expression didn’t change dramatically. But his grip tightened just slightly. And that was enough.
