SELENE NEXT DAY The combat field buzzed with energy under the bright morning sun. I stood on the grass with the other students, we wore simple training clothes. The instructor, a broad-shouldered man named Coach Theo, walked between us with his arms behind his back. "Today we focus on real combat," he called out. "No holding back. Show me what you can do."
