The Sentinel

PANTING from boxing the punching bag, Yulla grabbed the towel she left on top of the bench. It was her day off from the pack training. Her three-day perimeter duty for the week also ended yesterday. Often, she spent her morning either jogging around the borders of the territory or in the gym lifting weights. However, this morning she chose to fight with the punching bag until she was spent. She would have a great sleep later tonight due to exhaustion. “If you’re not busy, please report to my office.” That was beta Zeeki mind linking her. “I’ll be there in fifteen, sir.” She responded. She ran to the hut and went under the shower. The cool water feels great on her skin. The cabin was not new but she has been living in it since she was seventeen. The house where she grew up was burned down when the attack on the pack happened years ago. Her childhood memories and her parents’ memoriam were gone in the morning together with her father and half of the pack members. Her father was one of the pack warriors. He died protecting his pack, his family. The new alpha built several structures after the attack. Several cottages were constructed around the territory. One of them was Yulla’s. Hers was a single bedroom cabin with a small living room and an equally small kitchen. It was enough for someone like her who lived alone. Her mother lived with her in this cabin for a few months. However, she succumbed to despair months after her mate, Yulla’s father, died. Yulla’s family was one of the many families that were destroyed when the attack in Moonshadow happened more than eight years ago. Almost half of the pack’s population were murdered. That includes the alpha and his family except for the alpha’s daughter, Prima. The properties were destroyed and set on fire. Most of the children became orphans because of a man’s greed for power. Prima Moonshadow ascends to the alpha position as the remaining member of the alpha family. Because of the inability of the pack to defend its territory, Alpha Prima Moonshadow decided to reinforce the defensive unit of the pack. Alpha Prima devised different training sectors for the pack members who wanted to become warriors. The program starts at age fifteen. Yulla who was seventeen when it started, enrolled in the program. Seven years later, she became an elite warrior. A sentinel. She adored her father at a young age. She watched him train together with the other warriors. When he was still alive, she coerced him to teach her a few things to defend herself. She joined the yellow recruits for basic training. However, when the gamma noticed that she was quite advanced compared to the fellow recruits, she was transferred to the white rookies for defensive tactics. Having no one to depend on but herself, she focused on training. Years went by, the color of her training shirts change from gray to olive then, the most coveted uniform, the black shirt. Yulla wears her black shirt proudly. She worked very hard to become a sentinel. She shed blood and tears to attain the position. Rising in rank means hard work. She worked harder just like everyone else. Not only she want to become a useful member of the pack but also to defend its territory. She wanted the alpha to be proud of her. To be proud of the sentinels of the pack. Being a sentinel means being one of the best. She thought, being a sentinel was the best position she could ever have. She got the surprise of her life when the beta called her together with the other nine sentinels. They were handpicked to become part of a team that can be used by the alpha to take down the alpha that damaged the pack many years ago. It was an honor to fight together with alpha Prima. If she admired the female alpha before, she adored her to the next level when she learned where she was coming from. What alpha Prima went through was enough reason to be in despair. Rather than be hopeless, the female alpha used her anguish and anger to rise up. The woman is not only beautiful but fierce. She has so much willpower that even Yulla’s own mother will be ashamed of herself. Wearing a black shirt and a pair of black tactical pants, she laced up her boots. Yulla let her long, curly hair down since it was still wet from the shower. She did not bother to lock the door of the cabin as she went out to go to beta Zeeki in the pack house. The beta was alone when she reached the office. The other table was empty. The gamma must be in the training ground or in the training facility. She bowed her head when she stood in front of the beta’s table. She stood in attention. Her hands were on her back as she waits for his order. “Sentinel Smith.” She bowed her head a little in acknowledgment. “According to Mitos, one of the target's most trusted men is in Barcelona. He will have a transaction with the country’s drug kingpin.” Beta Zeeki started. “You will be sent overseas to check out the information and to know if the transaction indeed pushed through.” “Yes, sir.” “You will be leaving in an hour. Get your tickets at the alpha’s office. The Luna will assist you.” “Yes, sir.” “Dismissed.” Half an hour later, Yulla is standing at the door of the alpha’s office. In one hand, she was holding a traveling bag. She was also wearing civilian clothes to pass as a traveler. She made a warning knock before entering the office. She placed the traveling bag and a handbag beside the door. She bowed at the alpha who was behind her desk. A serious expression was on her face. Alpha Prima nodded. Her eyes went to the smiling Luna. She occupied the table of the gamma’s mate, Dana, who at the moment was on maternity leave. Temporarily, the Luna will be the alpha’s assistant. “Luna.” She bowed her head. “You must be Yulla Smith.” “Yes, ma’am.” “Babe, please give her the envelope I gave you the other day.” The alpha told her mate in a gentle tone. The Luna stood up and gave her the envelope. “Thank you.” “The ticket and the hotel reservation are inside. I already wired money to your bank account. In case that you need more, just send Zeeki a message. If you need anything at all, don’t hesitate to inform us.” The Luna stated. Her brown orbs were looking at her softly. “Yes, Luna.” “Mitos and Flip are waiting for you outside. They will run a few things with you as they send you to town.” The alpha disclosed. Despite the unsmiling face, it did not change the fact the alpha is a very attractive woman. “Yes, alpha.” “Have a safe flight.” “Thank you.” “I’ll see you in five days.” Yulla bowed her head before turning her back from the leader of the Moonshadow pack. “Please be safe, Yulla.” “Thank you, Luna.” Flip and Mitos were indeed waiting for her when she exited the alpha’s office. “I’ll be your driver.” Flip uttered. “And I’ll fill you in on the way.” Mitos said with a smile. The three of them were in the same platoon when she started as a white rookie. The two men were older than her by a year or two. Flip has always been a good leader. Instead of seeing his comrade as a competition, he saw each and every one of them as family. He lifted their spirit when the training gets rough. And he was one of the lucky members of the pack to have his family completely alive when the attack happened more than eight years ago. “This is the picture of Martin Benzon. He is one of the targets trusted warriors. According to the information that I gathered, he will meet with Papi Bernie or Bernard Alvarez.” Yulla looked at the picture handed to her. The guy is in his early thirties and he has Hispanic features. She flipped the page. A much older man was printed on it. “That’s Bernard Alvarez. He is Spain’s notorious drug lord. He’s a very elusive man. Despite knowing that he handles the buying and selling of illegal drugs in Barcelona, they don’t have enough evidence to prosecute him.” Mitos continued. “If Benzon meets with Lopez, we can conclude that the target is indeed in connivance with the drug cartel to finance his pack and conquer smaller packs.” “Copy that.” “Good. Memorize their faces.” “Done.” “Great.” He claimed the papers back and placed them inside his backpack. “You will use this mobile phone. The sim card is disposable. I already saved my number, Flip, and beta Zeeki’s for emergency purposes.” “Thank you.” “You will act like a tourist in Barcelona. You’re not going to bring any weapons with you to avoid any issues in case you are apprehended by the local enforcers.” “Alright.” “Good luck, Yulla.” “Thank you,” “And bring me some Hispanic baby mama.” Flip added. She glanced at him in the rearview mirror. He sent her a wink. “Or you can have some.” “Or you can give her some encouraging words.” Mitos butted in. “Those are my words of encouragement. We’ll never know, she might find her mate there. Right, Yulla?” Instead of responding, she just chuckled. “See? She’s happy. Her heart’s been bleeding enough.” Frowning, she gazed back at the person in the driver’s seat. Flip gave her a knowing smile. “You still worship the alpha?” Mitos uttered. Her eyes widen in surprise. She never told anyone! “That’s your answer, hacker boy.” “My goodness, I thought it’s just a phase.” “Only a blind person would not see how wonderful the alpha is. Yulla just got it bad.” Flip said in a defensive tone. “I know but did you see the Luna? She’s a badass. I like how she put Raul Ramirez on his ass. That recruit needs a beating.” It was clear how the hacker admired the Luna. And he was right. Luna Carmen is a wonderful woman who knew how to defend her mate when she has to. Yulla would have done the same if she was given a chance to reprimand the olive recruit. He was downright rude and has no right to be in the presence of a woman like alpha Prima Moonshadow. “You have a mate waiting for you out there, man. We all are.” Mitos added. If there was one that the three of them have in common, they have not found their mates yet. “I know.” She said. She did not add anything anymore. These men mean well.
