Desperately, Lorna tried to recall their shared memories, hoping to rekindle Cadell's feelings and avoid the consequences she now faced. In the past, Cadell might have softened. But now, Cyril's actions had hit him hard enough that Lorna's attempts were no longer effective. At most, it could buy her a little time. And that, perhaps, was all Lorna ultimately hoped for.
