Chapter 4

It has been well over a week since he left the full moon pack, but just a few days that he arrived at his own pack. The vastness of the kingdom had made alpha Duncan relinquish the anger he held towards the king and the watchers. No doubt that the kingdom was huge, and there was no way the king could have his eyes on everything that was happening within it. He perched on a sturdy tree branch and surveyed his surroundings. The midnight breeze played with his hair, and he closed his eyes as he inhaled deeply. The ordeal of the past months has left him scared so deeply to the point he knows his life will never remain the same. Even now, the warmth of his bed no longer lures him to sleep. Neither does his girlfriend. He prefers the coldness of the night, and the company of the sounds that come from the nocturnal animals. Revenge was all that fuelled him throughout his days in the forest, and now that the dark alpha was gone, he felt empty. Nothing excited him anymore, and he felt like a fish out of water. It looked as though his pain and suffering has moved on to a different level. The death of his parents and brother hunted him now more than before, and he felt more restless as he sort for answers. Another thing that bothered him was the state of his pack. His members looked better now compare to when he first came back after living like a rogue. Their state had been detestable. He shuddered at how malnourished and unkempt they had looked then. If truth be told, it was Lily that was working with Blake and his mate to get them back on their feet again. She has taken to her role of Luna as a duck to water. Thinking about his Luna had his mind wandering off to the one that was supposed to be his fated mate. “Would she have been able to bring back a crumpling pack.” Assuming the answer to be a resounding no, he felt satisfied and justified for choosing another. The loud call of an owl pulled him out of his thoughts. He focused his sight on the direction the screeching hoot was coming from and locked gaze with a pure black owl. Its unwavering yellow gaze pinned alpha Duncan, and he could tell there was something unusual about this owl. Everything about it was odd. From the colour to its feathers to the colour of its eyes looked different from every other owl that Duncan had ever seen. A mind-link from Lily broke his gaze from the owl, and it took flight.             *********   Lily woke up and found yet again that alpha Duncan was not in bed. She looked at the time and gave a worried frown as she sat up. She sent him a mind link even though she knew just where he was. In fact, she had followed him there severally when he could not sleep. Not knowing what else to do, she burrowed under the duvet, laid facing where her lover should to be and closed her eyes. This was not what she had envisioned during their days in the forest. She had pictured the perfect ending for them. Her exact expectation was that they will make it back here, mark each other, have pups and together run a successful pack. However, that expectation looks like it would not happen. It has been over one month since they regained their freedom and yet he has not marked nor claimed her as his Luna. Fear gripped her heart as she turned to her other side. What if he meets his mate before he decides to mark her? Would he be able to resist his mate and stick to their love? Lily wondered, or was he intentionally stalling until he meets her? Another thing that had her worried was how aloof alpha Duncan’s wolf was to her. He had never got to know her, or to even meet her. Not once have she felt his presence. Although Lily has seen Idris in action, he has never shown himself just for her sake. Whenever she and alpha Duncan has s*x, she always hopes his wolf would at least acknowledge her, but he always remained silent as if detaching himself from Duncan.   The door opened but Lily remained still, her uneven breathing made it clear that she was not sleeping. “Sorry, I had to step out without informing you. I did not want to disturb your sleep.” Alpha Duncan said as he walked towards their bed. Lily remained silent. He sat on the edge of the bed and took her hands. She let him do so without resisting, but remained in the same position. As alpha Duncan caressed her hand, his mind went back to the unusual owl he saw earlier. His presence had not spooked it, neither did it make any move to break eye contact with him. With his mind still on the black owl, he fell into a restless sleep.                    *********   That evening, alpha Duncan and his beta sat in his office to discuss about some pressing issues. They urgently needed to improve on the pack’s income and they also have to perform the ceremony that will officially merge the neighbouring pack to theirs. “The ceremony to join both packs will hold by next week, along with the Luna’s ceremony. There is no need to have two ceremonies.” Alpha Duncan said. “Have you found your mate?” Blake asked in an uninterested monotone voice. His response ticked alpha Duncan off because Blake is well aware of who he was talking about. “You know who your Luna is, but just to make it clearer to you and everyone else, Lily will be officially announced as my Luna next weekend.” The anger in his voice caused Blake looked up from the papers he was studying. He saw determination in his alpha’s eyes and knew that nothing will stop him from doing what he intended. He thought back to when they were in the forest. All Duncan ever did was what was best for his men. How come he is now so determined to do the direct opposite. However, Blake was quiet about it at the moment. “Do whatever you think is best for the pack.” Blake said as he stood up and excuse himself.    Alpha Duncan watched his friend leave his office and sighed. He stood up too and headed out to join Lily for dinner. After which they both retired to their room in the pack house. “Why can’t we move into your parents' house? That is the rightful place for us.” “I am not ready for that yet” “Another roadblock.” She sighed inwardly. “Would you like to take a stroll in the woods?” She asked outwardly, in an understanding voice. Alpha Duncan wrapped her in a big hug and thanked her for putting up with him. He gave her a lingering kiss, and she responded by kissing him back. They helped each other undress, after which he picked her up bridal style and carried her to the bed. Lily was lost in an emotional bliss when she felt his canines sink into her flesh. The fact that he was finally marking her numbed the pain his teeth caused when they sank in. She closed her eyes in ecstasy, but her joy ended abruptly when she felt an enormous amount of pain as alpha Duncan retracted his teeth. She tried to hold in the pain but could not. Her body felt like it was been shredded as the pain radiated from one nerve to the other. When she could no longer bear it, she gave a horrifying scream and passed out. Alpha Duncan sat there in shock for some seconds, but then sprang into action. He quickly wore a basketball short and carried her wrapped in their bedsheet to the clinic. He sent a panicked mind-link to the pack doctor and prayed to the moon goddess to favour him just this one time.
