Chapter 10: Fighting Fire with Fire

1510 Words
Kai's POV “Are they harder to beat than a regular hell flamed grizzly?” Prince Gabriel asked. “It honestly depends on who is taking them on.” I said. For someone like me or Riley, it won’t be much of a challenge, but for a newbie like the young prince… it could be a bit difficult. “Not much is known about the alphas of this magic beast. Very few end up being driven away from their caves.” Riley said. “True. In this case, it would appear that this one was a twin alpha but lost its place after fighting for dominance with its twin.” I said. “How can you tell?” The young prince asked. I pointed at the scabbed-up claw marks that were on the grizzly’s face and midsection. “Unlike with other magic beasts… hell flamed grizzlies are some of the few that multiple young at once is rare.” I added. Prince Gabriel looked confused for a moment. “It just means that, unlike other magic beasts that give birth to a litter of three to ten younglings at once… Hell flames grizzlies usually only have one cub each mating season. Just like snow tigers and stone lizards.” Riley explained. “Oh.” Prince Gabriel nodded in understanding. I never once took my eyes off the grizzly. He kept his eyes on me as if he knew that I was the bigger threat out of the three of us. “Stay back and watch, young prince.” I said. Just then, the alpha grizzly shot flames out of its snout our way. I smirked. That trick wasn’t going to work on me. I held out one of my hands and felt my beast soul, Titan, stirring inside me. I felt my body’s temperature rise as golden flames engulfed my hand and sprang out to meet the flames coming from the alpha grizzly. My golden flames smashed into the alpha’s red flames, and the red flames were quickly absorbed into mine. “Whoa.” I heard Gabriel whisper. I continued to blast out flames and used my mana to control them. Making my flames circle the alpha grizzly. The grizzly stopped shooting its fire and started to whine as it tried to back away from my flames. “How are your flames scaring it? Hell flame grizzlies are literally covered with them already.” He asked. “True, but even though their fur is thick and protects them from the heat of their own flames and most blades, it is not thick enough to protect them if the temperature were to increase past their comfort zone.” Riley explained. It was a simple solution that most people often overlook… but as the saying goes, ‘fight fire with fire.’ Some of the master tamers that I have met said that they used fire barriers when trying to tame hell flamed grizzlies or to divert them to a certain area where hunters could eliminate them. I heard Gabriel let out a snort of laughter. “There is no fire hotter than a dragon’s fire.” He stated. That was entirely true. A dragon’s fire is like the heart of a dragon’s being. The more emotions that a dragon puts into their flames, the hotter they become… but that said, a dragon’s flames also reveal the truth of their souls. My fire would never burn anything that my soul knows to be special to me. Even if I were upset with my sister, my flames would never harm her or burn her to a crisp. They would simply knock her away from me until we both cooled our heads. These are my flames, and they do not consume me. There is nothing more dangerous than a dragon that has let their flames consume them and run out of control. “Prince Gabriel, once I release my flames, I want you to observe how I handle an alpha magic beast.” I said. It may not cover all magic beasts, but it will give him something to be prepared for if he ever encounters an alpha magic beast when he is on his own. “Um, okay.” I heard his reply. I could feel the winds shifting. Knowing that Riley must have put a wind barrier between us and them. “Alright, we are safe and ready for a show, big brother.” I nodded and snapped my fingers. My flames instantly disappeared. Once all of my flames are gone. The grizzly returns to its hyper state and lets out a massive roar. It is pretty impressive, but it doesn’t even come close to my mother’s roar. I lower my body and sprint forward. I may not be as fast as my sister, but I am still pretty fast for being 6’6 and muscular. I am always training when I am not doing a job like this. Training keeps me grounded, while dealing with people makes me want to break things. I slam my fist into the grizzly’s gut, and it feels as sturdy as the walls in the training room that Mother created for us back at the pack lands. The bear tries to swipe at me with his massive paws. I bend almost all the way backwards as I twist my body and avoid four massive paws with four-inch claws attached. “Rookie move, bro. You never go for an alpha’s gut; their fat is like a steel wall.” Riley calls out. I huff out a breath. “I wanted to test a few rumors. We don’t see many alphas.” I called out as I grabbed the two middle arms and tugged them hard. They have some grit to them, so I was pulled even harder. I heard the joints snapping first before the flesh began to tear. Within a few more seconds. I ripped the grizzly’s middle arms off completely. The course of the course being so close, I was soaked in blood all over. ‘Damn it. Aunt Melody is going to freak out again.’ Titan commented as I jumped back and tossed the arms aside. I ignored him. Though he was completely right. Aunt Melody and Grandma Jess always freak out when Riley and I are covered in blood from the magic beasts we exterminate. ‘I’ll just jump in the lake before we go.’ I comment, though I know it is not going to help. They would smell the blood on me no matter how washed I am. I tried that last time. ‘You even used soap, and they could still smell it.’ Titan laughed. I huff again. It also doesn’t help that you can’t lie to Grandma Jess because she is a special wolf. “KAI!” Riley’s voice snaps me out of my conversation with my dragon, and I refocus on the alpha grizzly. It has flames swirling around it as it roars its bloody head off. “It's going supernova, Kai!” Riley points out. I snarl. A hell flame grizzly going supernova would destroy anything and everything around it. This being an alpha… I can only assume that the damage would be much worse. Super nova is a last resort because it would kill itself while taking everything else with it, but it might think it has no other choice, as I did some pretty decent damage for a grizzly. I allow Titan to come forward and feel my right arm shifting. Golden scales cover my skin, and my nails become talons within seconds. Rushing forward, I put all my strength into my arm. I can not allow it to explode. Jumping through the flames surrounding it, I aim right for its throat. It is over within a second. I completely severed its head from its body, and the flames died down just as fast as they came forward. I look behind me and see the body falling forward as the head rolls and lands in front of Riley and Prince Gabriel. I let out a breath as I dropped to my knees. Damn it… that was too close. ‘I guess we have become a little too comfortable.’ Titan said. ‘You think? I am pretty sure Mother is going to push harder the next time she trains us.’ I replied. I look up to see Riley offering her hand to me. “Think you and the prince can handle the cleanup? I have another matter to return to back at the pack house.” She asks. “Sure, but what do you have to do?” I asked as I let her help me back onto my feet. “Just got to help a girl who got in the middle of a dispute with members of another pack. It all happened within neutral territory, but I think we can get it all taken care of quickly.” She said with a smile. I nodded before turning to the prince. “You're up, my Prince.” I said.
