Chapter 4

Chapter 4 To say things weren’t really going as planned was the understatement of the century. Sarah and Allie’s family drama seemed to be following them everywhere they turned. Sarah’s ex-husband continued to terrorize her. Allie ended up making Carter Sarah’s unofficial bodyguard whenever he wasn’t working with the bounty hunters on an assignment. And if Carter could help it, he wasn’t leaving Sarah alone for too long. Eventually, Carter took it upon himself to sleep in his car outside Sarah’s new apartment building to ensure that Alexander never learned where she lived. And if the off-chance he did, Carter would be there to make sure no one entered her unit without his knowledge. For weeks, the only visitors to Sarah’s apartment were either Allie, delivery drivers such as Uber, DoorDash, Am*zon, or the mailman. Even though the coast seemed to be clear every night, Carter refused ever to leave Sarah’s side. She had no idea that Carter was keeping a close eye on her for her safety. Over time, Sarah started to develop feelings for Carter, and she would begin to miss him whenever he didn’t visit her at the office, escort her to the garage, or sit with her in the employee cafeteria during her lunch break. She wasn’t certain when she started to feel for Carter on a deeper level, but she was too afraid to let him know. Unfortunately, for her, Allie didn’t miss the signs and started to use her magic, so to speak, to push them together. One particular day, Carter was accompanying Sarah back to the front lobby at the company after lunch, and Allie happened to hear their conversation. With her amplified hearing as a werewolf, Allie heard the flirtatious tone in Sarah’s voice. She was shocked to hear Sarah ask Carter about his body count, of all things. “Damn, this girl has no shame,” Allie giggled to herself. “I don’t think you want to know,” Carter replied to Sarah’s question. “Oh, come on,” Sarah egged him on. “Do you know the saying, never ask a question you don’t want the answer to?” “Ah, it’s not a big deal. You’re a guy. I know most, if not all, guys have their count in the double digits,” Sarah said confidently, not afraid to hear the answer. “My ex does. Hell, his number was high while we were married,” Sarah jabbed at her own expense to lighten the mood. Allie shook her head at her cousin’s desperation to hear Carter’s body count. “This crazy girl …” Allie grumbled and shook her head again. She continued to listen to their banter when she suddenly heard Sarah let out a small gasp. Allie peeked from around the corner and happened to see Carter lean in close to Sarah’s face. “Are you trying to insinuate that you’re willing to sleep with me?” Carter asked Sarah. Allie made a shocked expression at his brazenness. But what caught her even more off guard was the fact that she could smell her cousin’s arousal. And if Allie could sense it from around the corner, so could Carter, as well. “If you haven’t noticed, having s*x is kind of difficult at the moment,” Sarah replied without hesitation and looked down at her pregnant belly. Allie watched for a little while longer until she heard Carter excuse himself. When he turned away to leave, Allie caught Sarah blatantly staring at his ass. “Could you be any more obvious?” “Ah!” Sarah shrieked and spun around to see Allie quirking a playful brow at her. “Unnie! When did you get here?” “Just now. I have an international call with the branch in Japan,” Allie replied. “Didn’t you just have one?” “There’s a lot I need to catch up on since I was on medical LOA last year. And don’t avoid my question,” Allie steered the conversation to Carter. Sarah tried to play stupid, but Allie wouldn’t let her. They started to converse in Korean for privacy reasons, until Sarah couldn’t take the heat from Allie’s frisky interrogation anymore. Sarah was hoping Allie would drop the subject, but she didn’t. Even more so, Allie told Sarah Carter that she also had feelings for her. Which she found hard to believe. “Unnie, stop. I’m pregnant. What guy in their right mind would be attracted to me?” “Shut up, you’re barely showing. Yes, you’re obviously pregnant, but you’re still beautiful. And you’re personality ain’t half bad either,” Allie said with a wink. “Geez, thanks!” Sarah grumbled in offense. The two cousins went back and forth for a few minutes more when Allie gave away that she had heard the majority of Sarah’s conversation with Carter. Sarah’s eyes widened in horror when Allie told her that the walls of the building echo around corners. “Get to know him a little more. He might end up surprising you,” Allie said in an attempt to push Sarah to open up more to Carter. “He seems like a player, though,” Sarah responded. “Eh, I won’t lie and say he wasn’t before. But then again, so was Dorian. But look at him now. He’s faithful inside and out. And you know as well as I do that a man will only change for the woman they truly love. So, you’ll never know if you’re that woman for Carter if you don’t try.” “And if he doesn’t change for me?” Sarah asked, her voice laced with skepticism. “Then kick him to the curb and then come tell me so I can kick his ass to Timbuktu.” Allie and Sarah chuckled, but Sarah’s face suddenly fell, and tears pooled in her eyes. “What’s wrong?” Allie asked with concern. I’m sad we didn’t get to grow up together. I like to think we would have been really close. Grandpa and Grandma’s greed ruined both of our lives; the only difference was that I grew up with a family, and you didn’t. They took so much from us.” “Hey, come here,” Allie said as she pulled Sarah into a hug. “It’s all in the past. Let’s get closer in the future. Hm?” Sarah nodded her head against Allie’s shoulder as the tears fell of their own accord. “Ugh! Stupid hormones!” Sarah laughed and pulled away. Allie wiped Sarah’s tears for her. Allie teased Sarah about Carter some more before she walked away to get work done, and unfortunately, for Sarah, the drama wasn’t only beginning. Her parents showed up unexpectedly, and let’s say it wasn’t the heartfelt family reunion Mr. and Mrs. Yun had hoped for. Sarah’s mother wanted to play peacemaker, while her father acted like a self-entitled, pompous jerk. Fortunately, with Dorian’s company specializing in security and surveillance, everything that took place in the lobby was captured by security and Dorian, who was exiting the elevator. The drama that ensued took a toll on Sarah’s emotions, and she ended up running to the bathroom to escape her parents. Dorian stayed and dealt with them until they left the premises. To ensure Sarah was okay, Dorian waited at the front reception desk for her. After having some choice words with Dorian and thanking him for intercepting her parents on her behalf, Sarah returned to work. Dorian then went to fill Allie in on what had happened. Allie couldn’t stop the eye roll that went to the very back of her head. Something in her told her that the drama was nowhere near close to ending for Sarah or her. All Allie could hope for was that Sarah’s feelings for Carter amplified sooner rather than later, so Carter’s bond with her could keep her safe.
