Chapter 2

EFFIE I kept looking through all the mess. Clothes piles, papers, even my socks and underwear were everywhere. My brother did a number in the room again. Knowing what my brother was looking for, I knew he hadn’t found it—my money. Ever since he stole from me the last time, I have been taking my money everywhere I go. Even to school. I have it hidden in a box that looks like a book. No one knows, it looks like an actual boring reading book. Blade hates reading, so he would never even think of looking at them. After what felt like hours of searching everywhere I could see, there was no doubt my journal was gone and he had taken it. My mind wracked over where he would have taken it, or even put it till my eyes landed on the window, where laughter could be heard coming from. My stomach sunk. Would he be that cruel? I knew my brother all too well. He blamed me for our mum leaving, for the way we were living. Even though he was living the high life with our father, I had nothing. He acted entitled to what I had, stealing from me was one of his favourite things to do when he knew he could get to me. Even though I earned little money, I still didn’t go out or even shop. I loved reading, the mere thought of being cast away in a different place in a book every night thrilled me. I would often go to the library to get one or two, but the ones I have here were ones the club girls have thrown away or I saved for. Not only that, but I have also never once been to a clothes store. All I own is Blade’s hand-me-down clothes—boys' sweats and T-shirts mainly. Shoes have been from club girls, from when they had thrown them out, and I took them out, would wash them and then wear them until they were in a worse state than before. What I wear is another reason why people bully me. Instead of finding out the truth, I get ignored. I have never had anything new. I have never worn a dress, not even when my mother lived with us. She always had me in second-hand clothes, nothing fancy. Butch never spent any money on me. He thought it was all a waste. Like having a daughter was an afterthought to him. Shaking my thoughts, I let out the breath I was holding and walked off. Thinking he may be telling everyone my darkest secrets in the club, was humiliating. But it was only one person I was more concerned about—his best friend. Savage King. Since Savage has been living here with us for the last four years due to his father’s death, I had started to develop a crush on him. The kind where you take every moment you get with them, even if it’s seeing him in the hallway or getting on his bike. You cherish those moments and for me, it was writing them down in my journal. There was only one thing my brother didn’t know; I kept two journals. The one where I write is the usual boy crazy one. The one my brother had taken from my room. Whereas the other one is the one I keep for myself, the one where I spill everything that has happened since my mother left. I have written everything about the little thing my brother, father and the club brothers have done to me. Keeping two journals was the best way to go, since I didn’t want something like this to happen with the other one. There are too many things there that would lead to the club being closed or even worse, being in trouble. And that’s not what I want. This is my home after all. Heading back down the stairs, I marched out and headed to the club. Laughter got louder as I approached. Placing my hand on the door, I could hear my brother’s voice, which made me stop and listen. “Listen to this…” I held my breath as he told everyone about the first time I had my period. “I didn’t know what to do, so I placed a towel in my panties and—” Laughter came again just when my heart sank. Being eleven and finding out about periods on my own was hard. No one here helped me. The club girls were all about being with the bikers that they never offered to help me. They all looked at me as if I was something they trod in. Needing to know who was there, I let go of the door since I didn’t want to be seen. I turned around and headed to the side entrance where the kitchen was. I looked in and noticed no one was around, which meant Kaitlin was out in the bar area. I walked into the kitchen and stopped by the window, where I got a good look at my brother and the rest of the brothers. All of them were there, besides my father and Dagger, my father’s VP. My brother stood center stage, holding my pink journal and reading segments out to all. More laughter came until I knew he had came to the part that would cause more humiliation. “Well, I be damned. Savage, it seems my sister has a crush on you.” My heart sank, while laughter and wolf whistles came. “Oh, shut up,” Savage grumbled, walking closer to him and grabbing the book from him. He had his arm around a club girl, Lolly, who was grinning. I watched in horror as Savage skimmed over the pages but looked up with a frown. “Well, nothing will ever happen. She’s not my type.” My stomach dropped at his words. Knowing I had no chance with him was one thing, but hearing them coming from him was even worse. “And why would you,” Lolly laughed. “She looks like a beast. I mean, she is hairy and is ugly as fuck.” Laughter came again, which only added to my humiliation more. “Maybe I’ll bet you to date her,” my brother said, glancing at his friend with an evil smirk. “I’ll give you all this money, only if you tell us if she is fat under all those rags she wears.” Blade was tapping his pocket, which made me wonder where he had found it. I know it’s not mine since it’s in my school bag. Wetness had formed on my cheeks. Moving my hand up, it was then I realized I was crying. How could my brother and all these bikers be so cruel to me? I was a kid, not yet a f*****g adult. Saying harsh words about a child’s body. There had been no help for me here, and now I was being targeted for something that was out of my control. My eyes went to Savage, who seemed not to bother with what my brother had said, while still holding onto Lolly. Even though I was grateful for him not agreeing, there was no one there to stick up for me. My brother started to read more once Savage handed my journal back to him. That was when I had enough, there was no way I was getting it back. There was also no way I was going in the clubhouse any time soon. Turning on my heel, I ran out of the kitchen and headed back to the house. Tears coated my cheeks. I opened the door but closed it with my back to the house. I closed the door gently and leaned my head on it for support. Letting the tears flow, I closed my eyes and let the hurt take over. That was all I could do. Suddenly, I heard movement behind me, but before I could react, something gripped the back of my hair as I opened my eyes in shock and whoever it was, they threw me back, throwing me down on the ground with a thud. Pain rippled through my elbow as I looked up at who had done such a thing—my father. “And where the f**k have you been?” my father shouted; his voice full of venom. “Why the f**k is this place not tidy?”
