Daniel stayed silent on the line. Regina waited. One second. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, like a blade hovering just above skin. She imagined him on the other end...jaw clenched, eyes calculating, ego bruised. The thought made something sharp and reckless bloom inside her chest. She smiled. “Yeah,” she muttered, more to herself than to him. “Let him f*****g rot.” She ended the call.
