Chapter Two
Abby slipped on her heels before heading to the door. She looked back towards the kitchen, hearing the sound of running water as Sam cleaned up the breakfast dishes. She didn’t know what she had done to deserve such a good friend and roommate, but she was thankful that Sam was in her life.
She closed the door softly behind herself and pulled her keys from her bag to lock the door. Once everything was secured, she tossed her keys back into her bag. She walked down the hallway thankful that they only lived on the second story and not the third or fourth; it seemed like the elevator never worked and would never be fixed.
She had only been living here for two months and it was still taped off. Walking down the steps with a sigh, she probably could use the extra cardio but that didn’t mean she wanted to do it this morning. Soon she would work in an office answering phones all day, that was, if she got the job. She hoped that she would.
The sun was shining brightly as she headed to the subway. All too soon though she was taking the stairs down to the subway platform.
Standing on the platform, she tried not to breathe too deeply. The smell of too many people in one place overwhelming her sense. When the doors opened, she stepped inside and found a seat on the hard plastic bench. Abby pulled out her phone and started browsing all the books she had waiting at her fingertips. Ready for her to select one to read and take her to a faraway place. She dragged her finger across the screen, finally finding a super steamy vampire romance novel she hadn’t read.
Sighing, she was happy to lose herself in a swamp in the South. Abby wasn’t aware of the man standing off to her left-hand side. He was breathing deeply, almost as if he was tasting the air. Like a predator scenting his prey, he eyed her, running a calloused hand through his brown hair.
He moved further down the subway car to find an empty seat; he needed to know more about her. Her smell was intoxicating, she smelled like nothing he had ever smelled before. If he had to describe it, if anyone had asked him, it was like sun-ripened berries drizzled with warm dark chocolate.
He looked at her long legs; they were crossed as she sat absorbed in what she was looking at on her phone. His eyes traced the curve of her breast beneath the vest she wore. He felt himself harden at the way she bit her lower lip, a slight blush staining her pale cheeks.
Fuck, he had never felt this turned on by someone in his life. At least not without talking to them first. He had to know more about her. He resolved to himself that he would have to get to know more about this woman. He would follow her to try to figure out how to approach her best. Knowing already that if he were to forward, she would run from him.
He knew Owen would understand why he was late for their meeting. He just had to know who she was?
He watched her for her short commute; watched as she looked at her phone. He couldn’t help but wonder just what she was reading that would make the blood rush to her cheeks, causing such a pretty blush.
She lifted her head up, seemingly lost in thought for a moment. White teeth nibbling on her bottom lip delicately. Shaking her head as she pressed a button on the side of her phone before slipping it into her bag and pulling out a small compact. He watched as she checked her makeup, touching up her light pink lipstick and using a bit of pressed powder on her nose.
He wondered what she looked like with her lipstick smeared from being kissed in the way he wanted to kiss her. Or if her auburn hair felt as silky as it looked. He could almost imagine how her hair would look with his fingers tangling into it.
He watched her slip the compact and lipstick back into her bag and pull out a piece of gum. He could smell the mint as she unwrapped it and popped it into her mouth. She stood getting ready to exit the subway car; he stood, moving closer. He didn’t want to lose her in the morning commuters.

Abby was oblivious to the man following her. She moved closer to the doors, hoping not to get pushed into them or groped. People on the subway could be super weird. She looked down at her watch and smiled. Abby would arrive a little early and that made her feel a little less anxious.
She ran a hand over her hair, smoothing down any flyaways as the doors slid open; stepping out with the crowd quickly walking towards the stairs to exit the dingy subway station. Once outside, she breathed in deeply when she got out onto the sidewalk; the air wasn’t as fresh as it was in the country, but she wouldn’t change it for anything.
Abby let her eyes adjust to the bright sun as she started moving forward towards the big buildings. She pulled her phone out to check the address one more time before heading forward at a good pace. It should only take her about ten minutes to get to the building. Watching all the people around her as she walked, still not used to the crowds. Sometimes walking down the sidewalk in the city could feel overwhelming, the noise, the people, the sights. It could feel very chaotic, and she hoped she would get used to it with time.

He lost her. Where could she have gone? Searching the crowd, looking for her auburn hair and emerald green shirt, but not finding her.
“f**k!” He swore to himself, causing several people passing him to stop and stare at him.
