"This was never my intention, my dear husband. They were harmless, I swear!" "You call this harmless; they have practically destroyed this nation!" The god of beginnings gets up from his chair and walks to the edge of the platform to look at the mortal world below. Ospen was in chaos, war had plagued the nation. I created the magi's. However, this is not what I expected. They were supposed to help one another and create a land of harmony using the powers I gave them to build and shape the world for the better. However, those with ill intentions have taken control of the lands and have been fighting for the last decade. "I Gratphy will fix this, please my honorable husband, please just give me the chance to do so, please." I pleaded with him before he wiped them all away with the help of Otia, the goddess of life and death. Cigyn, the goddess of chaos, stands and looks at us with fire in her eyes, clearly loving this. "And how do you plan to do that?" I smiled at her, then looked back at my husband, "Yhenar, my love, please just give me this chance and I will fix this." He looks at me with both anger and love in his eyes finally he sighs, "Fine but if you cannot fix this I will start over." I nod and jumped off the platform and headed to the main streets of the capitol. There, in the middle of the night, while everyone was sleeping, I went to the homes of the most powerful magi's two fire benders, two wind benders, two earth benders and two water benders. I used the bugs I had collected the night before going to Yhenar and crushed them into a fine powder and put them into small vales, making sure to keep the mates of each insect together to give the couples the power of Teleo. It gave the magi powers twice as strong and able to sense when the other is in trouble, the stronger of each pair are able to read the others mind and call for them if needed. After that, I would visit them in their dreams and teach them how to use the power. In two years, they had won the war but with a heavy cost most of their people were lost to the ice kingdom. The ice king, the one that started this war, had occupied most of the nation and was now free to rule the lands he had conquered. Ospen, the once great nation was now an Iceland all except the former capital Nellenk, which had become the last safe place for those who wish to live in peace. Thanks to the treaty, the town was saved, and they have been living without too many incidents, however as the decades pass the air has been shifting and the gods are not happy with this turn out. "You called this fixing?" I had returned to the land of the gods after many years of trying to get the nation to balance out but every city or town I save the harder it was to stay in the mortal world. I had bowed to my husband waiting for him to finish lecturing me on the ways this world isn't fixed, I am well aware of the unbalanced it was down there. Most of the nation's lands was frosted over. Once he finished, I took a seat in my chair next to the throne and nodded, "This is the start of fixing it yes, but I am tired, there is something going on in the ice kingdom and I don't know where to start so I am going to rest and once my power comes back, I will go back down and finish the job." I massage my neck and shoulders as I answered. "What will you do while you rest how is this world going to be put back into balance." I sigh, "Worry not my king I have pick two of the most powerful people to be reborn to use their powers to keep the protection shield around the untainted lands and will be safe until I return." I look over to Cigyn's empty chair, curtain beyond a doubt she was behind this, but I can't prove it so until I can regain my strength, I will put my faith in those two. ----- When I was young, I heard stories about the protectors of the land, they were the strongest to ever live with their powers we were able to end the war between us and the ice wielders of the south. Not only were they strong but they had the blessings of the goddess Gratphy who is said to have bestowed the power teleo, an ability to have a partner to read your thought and sense when you are in trouble, they are the only ones who have a partner for life through the years we have learned that doesn't always mean a romantic relationship but a bond between the two competent magi's sharing their powers amplifying them to a unimaginable degree. Out of the four pairs however one stood out the most with the strength of thousands of men they were able to create a heat barrier protecting the last corner of the nation Ospen, we have been slowing increasing our boarders however when I was fourteen guards and a few high councils started to look for the reincarnated infamous pair. In Ospen we get our powers at sixteen years of age every village will hold a small ceremony at noon for those turning sixteen they display what element they are blessed with and move into the schools' dorms to start learning how to use them. On my fourteen birthday I had begged my parents to take me to see the ceremony of the five people that were receiving their gifts that day. It was such a magical day but also a slight curse for me that is, because that day was the day I got my powers, the two girls and three boys had just finished preforming they abilities they were given one wind, two earth, and water in that order, I will never forget that day. We were clapping for the new magi's I remember I had to wipe my hand on my dress from the sweat of the beginning summer heat and was clapping overfull of excitement and joy when my middle fingers sparked a flame. I scream catch the attention of everyone around me my water wielding mother quickly puts it out but the flame on the stage starts to flare larger with each breath I took, panic and confused I start to feel lightheaded. The high council walks to the back of the room where I was and asked for my name. My father who is a council assistant step forward and speaks for me while my mother starts to fan me down helping me catch my breath. "Aphiena Flaris is her name." "Age?" I could feel the stares making my chest tightened, my arms started to feel like noodles, and I could hear my blood rushing in my ears, "Let use my office, this way." My father takes my arm, and we followed the town leader to his office at the other end of the hall. With the clear hallways I start to feel my breathing settling the dizziness slow disappearing. When we get in, I take a seat next to my mother my father stands on the other side of me. Only one of the high councils was in the room along with the town leader making the spacious room less daunting. The town leader gives me a glass of water, and everyone waited patiently as I sipped the cold liquid. "How old are you, my child?" The members of council asked after I set the glass down. "Fourteen, today." I answered in a low voice. "Oh, it's your birthday?" He asked a smile on his face he did his best to look friendly, but it wasn't working I nodded in responds. "It appears we have found our new protector." He laughs, "We will have to go to the main hall of course and do a few tests to be sure but today has been a blessed day and I know for sure Gratphy has smiled upon you." My parents and I were all shock to the core but next thing I know we are at the hall; I meet the two protectors they were older ladies with salt and pepper hair they were very friendly and had talked my ear off all day. By the time it was over we had discussed us moving closer to the city hall to start my training with the two women and then at sixteen I would be enrolled into the magic school and live a normal life before entering the role. The next month we processed with selling our house and moving into the new place provided by the council along with an allowance for myself to show the benefits of working for the city. I would go to regular school then two hours a day of studying and train then spend the rest if my day with my best friend Angelo, at sixteen we found that he was also a strong fire user and we had planned to go to school together our schedules were exactly the same but then the day we were supposed to leave he nor his parents ever showed up. My heart broke that day I haven't seen him since the summer, we turned sixteen when we made the promise to never leave each other's side. That was two years ago, and I am eighteen alone with those assh*le council members and forced to live this life without him. Beep...beep...beep. I hit my alarm off and get out of bed, "Hey Ray get up it's time for school." I say as I shake my roommate. "I don't want to, let's call in sick." My roommate/ best friend Raven Kingin groans. I met her on the first day of school freshmen year; we sat next to each other in our first class and just clicked. This year we were able to convince our old roommates to switch with us, so now we share a room. She pulls her blanket over her head while I yawn and shake my head, "You know they'll just send a healer here and then send us to class." "But I don't want to go studying the backgrounds of my element, it isn't fun. I have the power of the wind which would be fine if Mr. Jones wasn't an uptight ass all the time." She throws her blanket off and walks to the mirror, then using her magic to fluff her hair out after brushing it. "You're so lucky you have Mr. Gabriel as a teacher, god almighty he is sexy, it must be heaven to have fire magic." She sighs at the thought peeking over she shoulders wiggling her brows. "It doesn't really matter to me as long as I learn." She sighs at my statement and turns to look at me fully. She knows all about my childhood friend Angelo who I haven't seen or heard from for two years and knows I pretty much shut the idea of any relationships away. "You can't tell me you don't feel a heat run through you when his eyes turn red as he uses his magic." I laugh shaking my head, "Just hurry up I'm hungry." We go downstairs to eat once she finished getting ready. The school we go to is called Athena academy after the famous fire warrior. There are four dorms on campus, two for the boys and two for the girls, each with their own names. We live in the dorm Pax after the goddess of peace. When the bell rings we start to leave our dorm to head to class. "Oh damn, I forgot my first hour is outside today!" Ray says, then runs towards the gym, "Sorry Aphei." I just chuckle and continue to the school building where I meet my other friend Clay. "Yo." He says with one hand up. Clay Woods an old friend of Ray's from way back. She introduced me the same day I meet her, and it was obvious they liked each other, but they refuse to do anything about it. Oh, and his special power is earth. "Hey." He looks around and then asked, "Where's Ray?" "She forgot she had class outside today, so she went to change into her gym clothes." "Oh." I nod and we start walking when we get to the stairs he tells me, "Don't burn the school down please I have free period third hour." With a laugh I said I'd try not to then walk up the stairs as he goes to his earth elemental class, that is on the first floor, I walk in, and everyone was in a buzz. I go to a girl name Avila, "What's going on?" She gasped like I was crazy or something, "You haven't heard? there's a new student coming today, I saw him in the office he was so hot." That's when Mr. Gabriel walks in. He is the youngest teacher ever in this school. He is twenty-four and is famous for learning to master fire in only four years and is able to create almost any potion. He came to the school at sixteen like everyone else, but because he was so skilled, he skipped freshman classes. I had the privilege of having him in a class last year as a teacher's assistant; he was amazing and still is. He graduated top in his class and didn't even have to go to the next school to learn more magic, so instead he became a teacher aid, this year he had replacing our ancient one that was boring like Ray's teacher. Did I mention every girl, both teacher and student, are practically in love with him? "Okay, everyone sits in your seats, and I'll introduce you to our new student, Angelo Grands." He walks in and I couldn't help but stand up from my chair a jolt of excitement rushes over me. It was my Angelo, but he doesn't even look my way while everyone was staring straight at me, he was just looking out the window. I feel my chest start to tighten from the pain in my heart unsure where it came from; my breath gets caught in my throat, my stomach drops and I feel sick from embarrassment and the pain of the thought that my Angelo hates me, he must really hate me he won't even look at me. I can feel the tear forming a unknown wave of pain and worry filling my chest, so before they came streaming down like I know they will I ask in a shaky voice, "Can I...um step out for a second?" "Yeah, no problem." On shaky legs I walk out in a quick pace using the door in the back, so I don't have to pass him, I look in his direction one more time his eyes looked dull as if all the happiness was sucked out of him, I could see the deep sadness clear in them, breaking my heart even more, my mind was reminding me that he has gone through something terrible and I wasn't there for him. He is sad and I could feel that sadness as if it was my own, but my heart says whatever he went through I wasn't there and now he hates me irrational as that was, I feel in this moment that he hates me. I pace back and forth next to the classroom until my legs gave up and I sink down next to the door and lean my head against my knees taking a deep breath I try to think back on all the times we were together. 'Why doesn't he look at me? Why didn't he come back until now, I wish I could have helped him, he is so sad.' I try to get my thoughts together, but there are too many questions I want to ask, but how can I approach someone that won't look at me? "You okay, Apheina?" I look up to see Mr. Gabriel standing in front of me. I nod and stand up. "Are you sure?" I nod once more, "Yeah, I'm just, not myself right now but I'll be okay." We head back to the classroom, and he starts class I take my seat that's in back and keep my head down I couldn't watch the other girls swooning over Angelo and him smiling back, laughing, and most of all seeing other girls touch him it hurt. My chest really hurts. Once class was over, he left a flock of both boys and girls, mostly of girls followed behind him like he was a god. Finally, the first half of school ends all my elemental classes are done and I can now get to my general electives after lunch, and I can finally meet up with Ray in hall by the cafeteria, "Hey you, okay?" Raven looks at me with eye's full of worry searching my face, she is a person who is very protective of the ones around her, and I love her for that cause I know I can count on her. Seeing her I almost busted into tears, but I did my best to hold them in as I shake my head. "What's wrong with Aphei?" Clay asks as he walks towards us. Finally able to spill my guts I say everything in one breath as we begin to walk, "I saw my old friend the one I grew up with, however it's as if I he hates me now, he hasn't said one word to me it's like I'm invisible. I have tried to call him until his number got disconnected and sent letters to his grandparents' house, but he completely cut me off now he has the balls to pretend that I don't exist. I've waited all this time for him he was my first love and..." I cut myself off as I run face first into a solid back. "Sorr..." I started when I looked up, "Angelo?" He smiled at me coldly, it wasn't the Angelo I knew and cared for. "Hi, Apheina long time no see, it's been two years, right? Still have a habit of not looking where you're going." He laughs dryly, I nod unable to speak he looks tired, I grip the bottom of my hoodie as doing my best to not reach out and touch him but the way he looks at me as if I wasn't even here makes it hard to breathe again, "I've missed you." He pulls me in for a hug, but it feels like he was a miles away, "We should catch up sometime." He kisses my forehead and walks away. He was right there in front of me but didn't look me in the eyes and was gone in seconds as if this interaction never happened. I let out a breath I didn't realize I was hold in, and just stood lifeless as the bell rings, "Aphei we need to go, food..." I nod but my feet wouldn't move. I feel a hand pat on my shoulder snaping me out of the blur of a broken heart, I look up to see Mr. Gabriel standing behind me. "Are you okay?" I nod, air struggles to pass the knot in my throat. "Would you like to take a walk with me?" I nod again not trusting myself to utter any sounds knowing the next thing to escape my lips will be sobs, "You guys go we'll catch up later. I'll make sure she comes back smiling." We start walking before they respond. He sends a warming spell to calm my nerves through my body as we walked, I look at him and he smiles, "I thought you might need a little help." I smile and nod, "Thank you." I close my eyes and let the warmth replace the hurt that I was feeling. We walk through the halls going in a large circle neither of us saying anything until we make it back to the lunchroom, and he tells me, "If you need anything just come talk to me. I know how hard high school can be for others." I almost laugh, "Say the guy who was talented from day one. However as much as I wash it just my studies school isn't the problem it's boys." He laughs as I sigh looking away my face flushes as realization swept over me at what I just said. "Well, I can still help there a little I understand teenage boys since I was one once not too long ago." I laugh harder this time, "You may be a teacher, but adult is still a stretch for you you're barely in your mid-twenties." He leans in closer bumping shoulders he says, "Meaning I have very good references on why a boy his age is acting out." He motions to Angelo who was sitting outside on the bench head facing towards the sky with his eye's closed. "Oh him, it's not, I mean, it's a long story, or I guess I should say it's I mean the story isn't finished yet we're missing a few important details." I mutter words getting jumbled together "Alright well when it is formed, and you need help you know you can always come find me." With that he left the building then walks pass Angelo who is staring at me for the first our eyes meet. Mustering up some courage I walk outside, and I head to where Angelo is determined to find out more about what happened to him and his parents I wasn't giving up before I started if he won't talk to me first then so be it I, but he gets up and walks in the opposite direction with a disgusted look on his face. I huff in anger and head back to the cafeteria to find Raven and Jason. "Hey feeling better?" Raven waves me over taking a bite of her sandwich. I shrug a shoulder, "A little, to be honest I'm more pissed off than anything, where does this guy get off treating me like poop on a shoe?" "Oof, I wouldn't compare yourself to poop hun." Raven says patting my back I groan and rest my head on the table. "Boys are stupid." I mutter, "No offence Clay." He laughs, "None taken, your right we are stupid." I look at him he was reading another weird book. Groaning I look at the window that was facing the courtyard where Angelo was, I text my mom, 'Hey, have you heard anything about the Grands? Angelo is here at school.' It sends and I place the phone on the table, "With this type of day, the thought of having to visit the main hall for my monthly evaluation getting closer make me wish I wasn't chosen." I mutter into my arms. Clay sighs, he was never big on how the council was treating me or the other protectors as if "we are human meat shield with no lives." as he puts it. Due to the security, I wasn't allowed to tell him how the barrier worked now that we have been able to technologically transfer our powers to a generator and ever month the protectors would place both hands on the screen for a minute let our power flow into the machine thanks to engineering then eat a big cookie and take a nap for the rest of the day so to us it wasn't really the barrier that was the problem, the true issue was how they were sent to the edge and fight off some of the most difficult beast from the ice kingdom every now and then. His family has always been part of the outer walls defense and has heard stories about the things those two had to endure. He believed that the people of the nation should be doing more to help them. I haven't been on one of those missions yet but it's only a matter of time when I will be called. I might be able to go to school with learn everything with my pers however I still go to combat training every other Saturday and monthly transfer some of my power with the two protectors to ease the transition from them to me and my partner whenever that person shows up. "Make sure to eat something you'll need the carbs." He says pushing a pb and j in front of me. I glance over at him not lifting my head he was still reading his book I shift my head to look at Raven. "I'm going to drown myself in ice cream later care to join?" I ask reaching for the sandwich. "You know it." She smiles and pats my head like she's soothing a crying child. "Don't worry you'll be able to talk to him soon." She says in a matter-of-fact tone.
