I woke up confused, staring at an unfamiliar ceiling. For a moment, panic gripped me—where was I? Then yesterday's events crashed over me like a wave. Right. I was in a mansion. Married to my boss. Living a lie. The bedroom was flooded with morning light. I'd forgotten to close the heavy curtains last night, too exhausted after the emotional rollercoaster of the day. I stretched, surprised by how well I'd slept on the ridiculously comfortable mattress. At least that was one perk of this bizarre arrangement. My phone showed three missed calls from Mom and a text from Joseph: You okay? Call ASAP. I made a mental note to call them after I showered. First, I needed to figure out how this day would work. Alexander and I hadn't discussed the morning routine. Would we have breakfast together?
