The following day, I'm at the border checking on the guard rotation with Rowan. The two warriors on duty look exhausted. Dark circles under their eyes, movements slower than they should be.
"How long have you been out here?" I ask them.
"Since yesterday morning, Alpha," one of them answers. His name is Trevor. Good warrior but he's swaying on his feet.
"That's over twenty four hours."
"We were supposed to be relieved six hours ago but the replacement team got pulled to the eastern route."
I look at Rowan. "Why wasn't I informed?"
"The eastern route had suspicious activity," Rowan explains. "I made the call to redirect the relief team. I was going to tell you after this inspection."
"Next time tell me before making that decision. These warriors are falling asleep standing up.
