Third Person
By the time Madison reached the school, her rage had cooled a bit. She understood that wolves couldn’t go against their alpha’s orders, but if they heard something, they should report it. That’s why the council was there. If someone wasn’t commanded directly, they could speak out. But everyone was too afraid of the repercussions that might happen to their families if they were caught. So, nothing is ever reported, and nothing changes.
Change takes courage, and that’s something Madison has found. If no one will help her father, then she will. She will stand up for this injustice, ready to die if she has to. She will bring down Scott if it's the last thing she does.
Madison’s plan was always to run away with her father, but now she wanted revenge on the fated mate she never chose. The one who shattered her world. He would not get away with his lies. She should have been his saviour, but instead, he turned her into his nightmare. He thinks he’s gotten away with it, but he will soon learn that she was stronger than he believed.
Parking the truck, Madison grabbed the food she had brought with her and her laptop. School wasn’t out yet, but she would wait, and in the meantime would check her email and look up the Wolf Council. She wanted to learn everything there was to know about the people who hold her and her father’s future in their hands. This plan could get them both killed, but she is hoping there are still decent, honest wolves.
There were no new emails, and she sighed. She would look for temporary work that paid daily. Something was better than nothing. After sending her resume to an agency, she started her search on the Wolf Council. The website had profiles on all its members, but she dug deeper. She wanted to know who was friends with the Cypress Ridge Pack. She could cross those people off her list. If Scott caught wind of what she was doing, surely he would kill her father and lock her up.
“Mads,” Titus exclaimed. Madison looked over her computer to see the little boy grinning as he ran over to the table. She smiled, warmth spreading through her chest. She couldn’t explain it, but seeing Titus again gave her hope that everything would work out.
She laughed when he threw off his backpack and hugged her. She squeezed him tightly, needing this hug more than he would realize.
“Titus, how was school today?” She asked him, letting him go.
“It was okay,” he shrugged. Madison closed the laptop and turned her attention to the boy.
“Just okay? Did something happen?” She questioned as he sat beside her at the picnic table.
“No,” he sighed. “Sometimes the other kids aren’t very nice.”
“Aw, sweetie, I’m sorry. Why don’t you eat, and then you can tell me all about it?”
Titus’ face lit up when Madison held up the brown bag full of fries and two cheeseburgers.
“That’s my favourite place!” He cheered. “Thank you, Mads.”
Madison pulled out napkins and set up a place mat before placing the food in front of him. Her wolf howled in approval as the boy ate.
She then pulled out her own meal, and they ate in comfortable silence.
What they both didn’t know was that Alpha Barrett was there watching. He was parked up the street with his beta behind the wheel.
“What are you thinking, boss?” Beta Cory asked, watching as Titus smiled at his new friend.
The alpha stared at the scene, lost in thought.
Madison Frost, the daughter of Gamma Max Frost of the Cypress Ridge Pack. Not much about her had been reported. Her pack file was basically blank, with only the mention of her mother’s death and her father’s position in the pack. She had lived there her entire life, but was never associated with anyone. Everyone his men spoke to didn’t have much to say.
“Why doesn’t anyone in her pack know anything about her? Did you find her father?” Alpha Barrett asked.
“Our men haven’t been able to locate him, boss. We went to their supposed house, but it was empty and locked up. I did notice there was blood on the couch and floor from the window of the door. I wish I had more for you. We will keep looking, but if you want more, you may have to ask her yourself,” Cory replied.
“I don’t understand. She’s the gamma’s daughter. Someone of rank and no one in rank was her friend? How is that possible? I read the Gamma’s file; he was praised by so many, and now he just disappeared, and no one seems to know anything,” the alpha ranted, unable to wrap his head around it. If one of his ranked members went missing, he would be the first one in line to search for him, especially if they had a child. Why was his daughter hiding in the neutral city?
“We could just go ask her. Maybe she’s in trouble and can’t go to her alpha?” Beta Cory suggested.
“I wouldn’t trust Alpha Scott either,” the alpha grumbled before opening the vehicle door and getting out. His beta followed him. Alpha Barrett wasn’t going to get any answers sitting in the car watching her.
The alpha and beta could hear their laughter from the parked vehicle. Titus was in a fit of giggles as he chased Madison in a game of tag. Cory had a knowing smirk on his lips. The woman was beautiful, even wearing an old flannel shirt over a tank top, and jeans. Her red hair was in a braid with hair framing her angelic face. The beta had his suspicions about his alpha’s real intent. He noticed the way he looked at her at the Cypress Ridge pack house. He hasn’t been the same since.
“Titus,” Alpha Barrett called out as they approached the two, who were playing.
“Barre, you’re here!” Titus exclaimed, rushing over to him. He was excited that his older brother was there. “Can you play with us?” he asked, hugging the alpha.
Barrett’s eyes were locked on the woman he saved from the speeding car. She looked different then, happy. But now standing so close, he could see the pain in her eyes. Something had happened, like he and his beta suspected. This could be his chance to get his sister away from Alpha Scott for good.
“Titus, buddy,” he looked down at his brother. “Can you play with Cory? I need to speak with your friend?”
“Okay, but only if you’re nice. She’s my friend,” Titus told Barrett protectively.
“I promise, buddy,” Barrett promised, holding his hands up in surrender. “I only want to speak with her.”
“Okay,” the boy pouted before taking Cory’s hand. “I guess you’re with me,” he grumbled.
Beta Cory almost laughed as Titus pulled him along, heading in the direction of the play structure.
Madison and Barrett were left staring at each other. She bit her bottom lip, nervous about what this strange man had to say to her.
“Mads, right?” Alpha extended his hand.
“Yes,” she hesitated, but politely shook the man’s hand.
“I’m Barrett Grimm,” he introduced himself.
Madison’s eyes went wide before she snatched back her hand, as if his touch burned her and lowered her eyes to the ground.
“Alpha Barrett,” she stammered. “What can I do for you?”
Madison's heart was pounding in her chest. This alpha's sister was Scott's Luna. He would surely be on his brother-in-law's side, and Madison couldn't risk her ex-mate finding out about where she was or about her plan. She knew she would have to walk away from Titus, even though the thought made her heart ache.
