Chapter 3

_Lisa's POV_ He is our mate. He is our mate. We have finally found him! Sierra’s voice echoed over and over in my mind, so full of joy and excitement that it made my heart twist. She was practically dancing inside me. I could feel her energy pulsing through every part of me. She was howling with happiness, ready to leap out and press herself against him. But Kael didn’t move. His face told me everything. He wasn’t happy. He wasn’t excited. He looked... horrified. He stepped back, shaking his head slowly like he was trying to wake himself from a bad dream. “This is impossible,” he said, his voice low and tight. “You can’t be my mate.” My heart clenched in my chest. He looked at me like I was something wrong. Something broken. He took another step back. “I love your sister. Roxanne. Not you.” I sucked in a breath, but it felt like my lungs were filled with ice. The words stabbed through me like knives. Sierra whimpered inside me. No... he’s lying. He’s just confused. He’s our mate! I swallowed hard and forced myself to speak. “Kael, I didn’t choose this. I didn’t ask for it.” My voice shook, but I kept going. “The Moon Goddess has decided. This bond—it’s real.” He laughed bitterly, but there was no humor in it. Only pain. “F*ck the Moon Goddess,” he growled. “I can’t accept you as my mate. I love your sister. I’m going to be Alpha. She’s the one I want beside me, not you.” The words echoed in the hallway like thunder, slamming into me again and again. I felt my legs tremble. My hands were cold. My chest felt like it might shatter. “But we’re true mates,” I whispered. “We’ll never be happy if we try to be with other people. The bond won’t let us go that easily. You know that, Kael. The mate bond will always pull us back together.” I looked at him, begging him with my eyes to just listen. To feel what I was feeling. I wanted him to see me. Not as Roxanne’s sister. Not as the weak girl in the corner. But as his mate. His equal. But Kael didn’t soften. His jaw clenched. “There’s an option,” he said coldly. “We break the bond.” “No.” I shook my head. “No, that’s not right. There has to be a reason why the Moon Goddess paired us. She doesn’t make mistakes. Going against her is—” “Would you be happy,” he interrupted, his voice rising, “to stay with me while I’m f*cking your sister at the same time?” My breath caught in my throat. I stared at him, frozen. He kept going, his face twisted in anger and something else I couldn’t name. “Is that what you want, Lisa? To live in the same house, watch me kiss her, sleep with her, while you sit in the corner hoping for scraps of my attention? Is that the life you want?” His voice was sharp, like broken glass. “Do you really think I’d be happy with you? You and I? That’s a disaster waiting to happen. If I accept you as my mate, then three lives will be ruined. Mine. Yours. And Roxanne’s.” Sierra howled inside me. Her anger and pain were burning. Why is he acting like this? He’s supposed to be drawn to us. He’s supposed to want us! But I already knew the answer. I had always known. He liked Roxanne more than me. He always had. Everyone did. She was beautiful. Confident. The perfect Luna. And I was... invisible. I bit down hard on the pain rising in my chest and forced myself to breathe. My hands were shaking. “Then let’s talk to our parents,” I said softly. “Let them decide. Let’s tell them the truth and ask for their guidance. We’ll do whatever they say.” He stared at me for a moment, eyes narrowing like he was trying to read my mind. Then he gave a cold nod. “Fine,” he snapped. “Let’s go downstairs and announce the bad news.” He turned sharply, stalking down the hallway. I followed him slowly, every step like walking through a storm. Sierra was silent now. She wasn’t crying. She was seething. He is ours, she said, her voice low and furious. And he will regret this. I didn’t answer. I didn’t know what to feel anymore. One second I was flying, free and whole. And the next, I was crashing back into the ground, shattered. We walked down the stairs, side by side but miles apart. I could hear the chatter and music from the living room. Laughter. Glasses clinking. The party was still going. No one had any idea that my world had just fallen apart. I kept my eyes on Kael’s back as we reached the last step. His shoulders were tense. His fists clenched at his sides. He was angry. Not just angry—furious. And I was terrified. Not of him. But of what was about to happen. Of what he might say. Of what Roxanne might do. And worst of all... of what our parents would think when they found out the truth. I wasn’t ready. But it was too late to turn back now. Kael turned toward the living room, his jaw set like stone. I followed him. And everything changed.
