There's Something Else

Rowan's Point of View  Dylan and I had been laying on her couch all morning, each at the other end so we were facing each other. I noticed her trying to hide her feet under the blanket we were sharing, “are your feet ticklish?’ “No, not really, why?” “Because you’re trying really hard to hide them,” I laughed “You don’t miss much do you Rowan?”  “Not a thing,” said as I gazed at her “You caught me, I need a pedicure and I don’t want you to see my busted toes” she said as she covered her face with her hands. I lifted her feet onto my lap and began rubbing them, after a lot of pleading puppy dog eyes I finally convinced her to let me paint her toenails, not that I thought they needed to be painted, I just wanted to pamper her anyway I could. As I was finishing, she surprised me, “okay, what’s your deal? Nobody is this perfect. Are you married?” I looked at her, her eyes were black as they intently stared into mine, she was not kidding around and I knew I couldn’t lie to her, nor did I want to. I rarely told people that I was a vampire and I certainly didn’t tell them the day after I met them, whoever they were, but at that moment I knew I had to tell her the truth. That was part of the reason I hadn’t given into my burning need to ravish her, I thought she should know the truth before she made the decision to let me inside of her. “No,” I finally said, “I’m not married, I’ve never been married, but that might be easier to hear than what I’m going to tell you.” Her body tensed and the way her face flinched broke my heart, I could already tell that life hasn’t always been kind to her and she has had more that her fair share of pain in her 26 years and I was really, really hoping I wasn’t about to add to it. I looked at her, she said nothing, she just stared at me, mentally preparing herself for whatever bomb I was about to drop on her. I was nervous, my voice cracked as I choked out my next words. “I, uh, I’m a 200-year-old vampire actually.” “What???” “Well, technically I’ve been a vampire for 170 years, I was 30 when I was turned,” I said and then immediately wished I hadn’t and yelled at myself to shut the f**k up. “You’re a vampire?” Dylan said in total disbelief “I am.” I quietly said back to her “That’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life. Of all the things that I thought you were going to say that wasn’t even on the list.” She was calm, much calmer than I’m sure I would’ve been had I been in her position. I was hopeful that the fact that she wasn’t screaming or throwing me out was a good sign and my que to come clean about everything. “When I saw you outside Flops yesterday morning, I was captivated and needed to meet you. One of my buddies, Colton, who you met last night, he was the one that met you outside the club last night.” “I know who Colton is,” she sharply said as she cut me off. “Is he a vampire too?” “Yes.” “Does JJ know that?” “As far as I know, she doesn’t. This obviously isn’t something we share with many people.” “So why did you tell me?” “Because you already mean a great deal to me, and if I were you, I would want to know something like this sooner than later. I think it would be worse the longer I didn’t tell you. It almost feels like lying, not telling you.” She stared at me for what seemed like forever, “prove it,” she said matter-of-factly. I thought about what I could do to show her that I wasn’t out of my mind and really was a vampire. Something that wouldn’t scare her, I figured my vampire speed was the least scary of the tricks I could show her.  I criss crossed her house in a matter of seconds, Dylan’s already big eyes were huge when I sat back down on the couch, she sat silent for a few minutes, I could see her trying to process in her head what I had told her and what she had just seen. “Is that how you knew where to find me when I was in the bathroom at the club last night?” “Yes.” “Have you used any other vampire hoodoo on me?” “NO! Absolutely nothing, I swear to god Dylan. Everything else that has happened between us has been natural. I promise. That’s why I wanted to tell you right away, I didn’t want you to second guess our entire relationship, however long down the road. Also, I want you to have full access to all parts of my life. I don’t want to have to hide things from you or whisper behind your back. I’m all in with you girl.” She was staring off into space, still trying to wrap her head around the fact that the guy sitting on her couch was a vampire, the same guy she had serious make out sessions with. The last thing I wanted was her to be frightened of me or to feel violated in any way. She surprised me when she said, “Rowan, I honestly have no idea what to say right now. I mean it’s a lot to take in.” “That it is. I think I should go and give you space, I’ve given you a lot to think about, but before I go, there’s something else you need to know.”
