FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AGO When Rose woke up in the middle of the night, she was lying on the bed alone. The lamps had been put out, but the fire was still going. Someone was sitting near the hearth, his back to her. Still half-asleep, she thought it was Andrew. “Why aren’t you sleeping?” He turned to face her. It was Raine, not Andrew. “You are awake?” “Oh, it’s you.” She sat up and looked around the chamber. There was no one else around. “Where is Andrew?” “He stepped outside,” he replied. “What about Dale?” “They are together.” Without another word, she rose from the bed and headed for the exit. Raine scrambled to catch up to her as she made her way through the dark cave to its mouth. When he got to her, she turned to face him with an accusatory look. Andrew was nowhere to be seen
