FIVE HUNDRED YEARS AGO Rose came to with a start. She sat up, bracing her hands on…hard floor? Ground? Her eyes darted around. It was dark. So dark she could barely see what was right in front of her. Silent, too. She strained her ears to pick up any sound but got nothing. Wherever she was, it had to be the middle of the night. She was parched, the back of her head was throbbing in pain, and her side hurt. She tried to gather some strength to get up, feel around, figure out where she was. But her body was too weak.
