♥ Chloe ♥ The second the motel door creaked open, I shoved the burner phone under the mattress. Fast. Quiet. Like I had done nothing. Michael walked in with two paper bags and a smile that didn’t reach his eyes. “Dinner,” he said cheerfully as he kicked the door shut behind him. “Burger and fries. Not gourmet, but you always liked simple things,” I nodded, careful not to let my voice crack. “Smells good,” I said, and it wasn’t a lie as my tummy rumbled. Michael handed me one of the bags and dropped into the creaky chair across the small table. The TV was on the one channel the motel offered. Old-style movies. Black and white stuff.
