Chapter Eleven The car eats up the highway in silence, rain lashing the windshield in endless sheets. The wipers swipe back and forth like a ticking clock, the only rhythm to a night that feels suspended. Bella’s head rests against my chest, soft breaths evening out into sleep. My arms are locked around her as if I could shield her from the world with nothing but my grip. Across the console, William drives with one hand on the wheel, the other loose in his lap, calm as stone. He hasn’t said a word since we left the city, since the apartment’s door splintered and the world fell out from under me. “You can’t keep doing this,” I snap finally, my voice low so I don’t wake Bella. “You can’t just break into people’s lives and decide you own them.” His jaw shifts, a single muscle tightening.
