Prologue

235 Words
Three Years Ago The city didn’t sleep. It pulsed—loud, bright, electric. But inside the quiet hotel room, it was just her and him. Calla Reyes had never done anything like this before. One night. No names. No promises. Just heat, heartache, and the unspoken need to forget—for a moment—that life could be cruel. She traced her fingers along the edge of the sheets, still warm from where he’d been. He was in the shower now, the sound of running water the only proof that it hadn’t all been a dream. Her heart thudded, confused by the comfort of his arms and the fire of his kiss. She told herself it didn’t mean anything. That he would go his way, and she would go hers. No last names. No questions. No expectations. But the universe had a different plan. Because three years later, it wasn’t his memory that stayed with her. It was the test that was on her shaking hands. Two lines. Positive. And no name to write down next to father. She never even knew what to call him. But she never forgot the way he looked at her—like she was the only thing that had ever made the world stop. And three years later, the world would stop again... when she met him face to face. And this time, he would know her name.
