Chapter 56 - The Trial Continues

It doesn't have to be this way, I know. He had been a friend to me before we dated. Heck, even Emily was a friend to me before we dated. But I had to cut them off. Doing this will make all of our lives safer. It would make Hell safer for Lilith and Lucifer, as well. As much as I had wanted to keep the relationships I had formed on Earth, with Doc Lola, Kiki, and the others, my responsibilities as the Queen of Hell came first. Above all else, I was told. "I agree to erase my past and current life," I answer after minutes of deliberation. I could tell Lilith and my father beside me was left gasping, shocked at my proclamation. "You are a brave girl. You deserve to be happy. As do all your peers. I shall grant you one wish for your obedience and resiliency. This shall be your parting gift as the Queen of Hell." The Creator expressed with a kind face. "Santi, darling, do you know what you're getting yourself into? This is not a joke." Lilith grabs me by the hands to try and stop me from one of the worst decisions of my life. "I know, and I agree," I tell her with a sad smile. "You do not have to do this. You don't have to sacrifice all that you are and all that you have been for a momentary pleasure on Earth." Lucifer argues. "Dad, I know this is hard," I pause to emphasize my sincereness. I wanted him to remember this moment, and remember how firm and sure I am of my decision. I wanted him to know I had no regrets in my life at all. "But this is exactly the type of thing a Queen is crowned for. I know I haven't been crowned yet, but the obligation and the responsibilities have always been mine. Let me do this for you." I reason. His eyes begin to tear up. I almost couldn't believe it but the teardrop on his cheek proved me right. "The humans are not worth it, Santi," He continues to growl through his anger. "Yes, but you are." "I truly believe you were born on the wrong side of the coin, angel." My father's eyes mellow out and lighten. Their dark shade wore off. They had become glassy. He approaches me and kisses the top of my forehead. "May you have a wonderful life above. Know that daddy is always thinking of you." "I know, dad. Also, never stop doing good things for others. Just because they banished you somewhere bad does not mean that you have to be bad, too." "Numbers..." Archangel Michael trailed off as if he thought they could take the bases by themselves. "Again, that would depend on the substance of the trial; might range from tens of individuals to perhaps a hundred or more," his angel colleague said, completely baffled. "Will there be any communication between the portals and realms so we might know which one it is if we went into one?" he queried next, and the Creator shook His head, recognizing His angels' lack of compassion. "I strongly doubt it, but apart from that, if we broke into one of them and it turned out to be the wrong one, Queen would shift all of her guards to the one carrying the substances, making it inaccessible; that idea just doesn't work in any way; we need to reach someone on the inside who actually understands which one the drugs are being held in, that is honestly the only way we are going to be able to figure this one out." Another one told him. "I managed to pull you out for this so we wouldn't have to do that." Angel Michael asked, catching his choice of words, "So there's a 'we' now?" "That's comforting," she murmured as she straightened up from her seat at the table and crossed her arms, her gaze fixed on him. Since meeting her in prison, he has done the same to her, keeping a tight eye on every move she makes. His notepad was never more than an arm's reach away from her, never far enough for her to grab and skim over it, despite the fact that he never left her alone. She had been out of prison for six hours, and the only time she had been apart from him was to use the restroom after they got to this strange location.
