Georgia stared at the paper in her hands, her breath barely moving in her chest. Bonnie's death certificate. The words didn't shock her. They didn't scare her. They didn't make her hands shake or her heart race. But something low and cold slid under her skin anyway. Not fear... awareness. Sharp and clear. Someone was pushing her. Testing her. Trying to stir something old and buried, that's if Bonnie had been buried. Her eyes moved slowly over every line on the paper. Every word. Every stamp. Confirmed. Stamped. Official. Her fingers curled around the edge of the document. She felt the sharpness of the paper press into her skin, grounding her, reminding her who she was. Who she had become. She took a slow breath through her nose. In. Out. Then she folded the certificate once. Neatly.
