CASSANDRA’S POV The house was unusually quiet, the kind of silence that made the ticking of the old wall clock sound like a hammer striking stone. Light filtered weakly through the linen curtains, and the air still held a chill that hadn’t yet shaken off the night. I stood in front of the basement door. Locked. It hadn’t been like that when we arrived. The first day, it was slightly opened, just enough to suggest it hadn’t been used in a while. Now, it had been firmly shut for days.
