I pushed Arthur away and sat down.
"I'm so glad you're back," I said, feeling embarrassed as I got caught. "Are you okay? Where were you?" I asked Lea.
Arthur wasn't too surprised, even though he couldn't hear my conversation with Lea. He asked me, "I'm sorry, did we go too far? I understand if you're not ready."
I couldn't reply; Lea was yelling inside my head.
"How could you betray the mate bond at the worst moment? Where was I? Well, at first, I was asleep. I needed a beauty rest after that swim we had. But then I felt immense pain coming from Luke, and I tried to talk to him, but all he said was that he was fine. It must be because of our connection, so his pain knocked me out completely. Then I woke up to this!"
"Oh no, he is hurt. What do you think happened to him?" This was a true nightmare. Did he get captured while I was doing...
"I don't know what happened, but I would like to know what do you think you are doing here?" she replied angrily.
"I'm sorry. I feel completely smitten by Arthur. When he is next to me, I don't understand it. I can barely control myself."
"This is very strange. First, I've noticed you've stopped calling him the Doctor. That is your first mistake. But what you've described is very, very unusual. Jakob is your mate, and the Doctor is a Vampire. Don't you feel his stench?" she asked me.
I tried to ignore Lea. I wanted to reach out to Jakob, but I could not. Was she blocking me with her anger?
"I feel it less and less of a stench around him," I replied guiltily. I could not smell much around him. I felt so hot and bothered. I had to clear my head. "But I'm worried about Jakob, who is not replying to me. I can't reach him."
I felt how angry Lea was with me, how frustrated she was with me, and I felt the same. I wanted to know if she felt or knew anything about Arthur, but I could not ask her now. Jakob needed us. That was our priority.
"Luke is alive. I know it! I would have felt it if he had died. But he was in pain and is also quiet now. You should be trying to get some information from the Doctor instead of doing other things with him," Lea told me.
I nodded.
"Are you talking to someone?" asked Arthur.
I nodded and made a sign to write again.
"Can this wait until later?" he asked. "It's almost morning. You should get some sleep. I need to go to the mansion so no one suspects anything."
I insisted with wild gestures. I didn't care about sleep. I needed to know what was going on. The guilt and the proximity of Arthur were driving me insane. The worry about Jakob made me feel more than remorse. Was this real? I was in the mansion with a handsome vampire while Jakob was possibly tortured.
Arthur brought me a pen and paper.
"Where is Jakob?" I wrote.
This time, Arthur looked uncomfortable.
"Can we please talk about this when I return?" he asked.
I shook my head.
"Okay, I didn't want to tell you, but Jakob has been captured. When you escaped, the guards looked around the mansion and found him," he said.
My suspicions were confirmed. I started to shake, and tears began to fall uncontrollably. Why hadn't Jakob told me this when I reached out to him? He must have been worried that I would come back for him. He was a fool for hiding this from me. I was a fool for leaving him behind and enjoying myself here.
"Was he tortured?" I wrote on the paper.
"When they captured him, he was just being held in the basement cage. I found a moment when I could speak with him briefly alone. He was the one who told me where you were."
Jakob trusted Arthur, which seemed unlikely, yet I trusted Arthur too, even though he had already hidden things from me. I was frustrated now.
"He knew I was the only one who could safely get to you," Arthur continued. "They are probably watching the pack closely in case anyone would help you or if you were to come back."
I noticed that he avoided my question about torture and circled it on the paper.
"You can't help him right now. There is nothing you can do. It would be best if you hid here until they stop searching. Then I can help you escape from this island." He handed me a tissue for my tears.
I pushed his hand away, and regretted it as the tingles were stronger than ever. I stood up, and I wanted to scream, scream at the top of my lungs, but nothing came out. Jakob was trapped. Was I trapped as well?
"I have to help Jakob," I wrote.
"It's nearly impossible," Arthur replied. "He is locked up in a cell. The number of guards around the house has been doubled." He looked worried.
I knew that I had to do something, with or without Arthur.
"Lea, can you try reaching out to them?"
"They are not responding," she replied a minute later.
I tried calling out to Jakob, but I sensed nothing.
"Jakob will make it out alive," Arthur reassured me. "Albert would not kill the Alpha."
But I didn't trust him now. I was not sure why he had this power over me, yet he hid things from me.
"Albert?" I wrote.
"Mr. Jules," he replied.
Of course, Arthur was on a first-name basis with Mr. Jules, but I had not heard him use it before. I stared at Arthur, trying to understand his intentions. Could I trust him, the vampire who now had me in his place, helpless?
As he felt my questioning gaze, Arthur looked away from me.
"I really should go so we don't raise any suspicions. Feel free to do anything you want inside my house. However, I will lock it up so that no one can accidentally find you," he said.
I threw the paper on the ground and gestured 'NO' with my head, to the point of almost breaking my neck. I was angry. I knew he was just trying to trap me here.
He reached for a hug, but I pulled away. Even that motion made me shiver.
"I am sorry, Sabrina. It's only for your safety," Arthur sighed and left my room.
I followed him, watching him descend the stairs and leave the mansion. I looked around, thinking about what I could throw at his head, but nothing was close.
The door behind him locked, and I was alone and locked up again. But not completely alone.
"We should get out of here. We need to figure out how to get to Jakob and Luke," Lea repeatedly told me. I paced around, considering my next move.
"I agree," I replied. "But we need a plan. Let's say we somehow escape this locked house and get a car. All I can think of right now is surrendering and hoping they will release Jakob, I just wish he would talk to us, then maybe we could come up with better plan to get him out of there."
We were wandering through the house, looking for any ways to escape. Every window was sealed, every door outside was locked. As a rush of adrenaline was leaving my body, I started to feel more tired and hopeless.
Then I noticed the phone. The landline phone was just sitting there. "Can I use it to call my parents or the police?"
