It was getting late. We stopped at Michelle’s apartment building.
“Give me your phone, and put this on, if you want your friend to go home safe and sound,” commanded Mr. Jules and gave me a silver metal band.
He never even asked her for the address. It was all too terrifying. Even though Michelle was in the car, I felt utterly isolated since she acted as Mr. Jules’s puppet doll, doing anything he asked and nothing more.
I gave him my phone and looked at the silver band, confused.
“This is your collar; put this on your neck,” he explained.
I did what he asked, knowing that Michelle’s release would be entirely based on my compliance.
It was somewhat flexible and possibly magnetic.
He pressed something on his wrist, tightening slightly around my neck.
I instinctively tried to grab it and felt an instant jolt.
“Only Master can take it off,” he said.
“Master?” What the f**k!!
“I will explain it later.”
Then he turned and looked directly into Michelle’s eyes:
“You and Sabrina argued, and you don’t want to talk to her. If anyone asks about her, she got into a special program as an exchange student and will not be back for a while; she also doesn’t want you to contact her. Run home now!”
Michelle nodded quickly, left the car, and disappeared into her building door. I had a sigh of relief; at least she was safe.
At that point, I was utterly alone with this terrible man. Maybe somehow, I could run away from him and get out of this mess. At least the trance technique he applied to Michelle didn’t work on me. It was so horrible to be so helpless and do everything he said.
He knew exactly what I was thinking. “Don’t try anything funny with me. If you do, I can easily get to Michelle or, even better, to your parents.” He paused, calculating something in his mind. “Also, that present I gave you will keep you safe for your own good.”
While he did all these terrible things to Michelle and me, he didn’t look like he had any joy. But, he was not upset either. Instead, he was very calm and methodical, like someone just doing his job.
He started the car, and we left Michelle’s place and my old life behind.
“What are you going to do with me?” I asked, shaking.
“You will be integrated into the life you should have had from birth,” he replied.
“And what is that?”.
“You will be serving your master and leaving a humble life meant for your species.”
At least he was not planning to kill me right away.
“Are you going to be my master?” I asked. Tears were rolling down my cheeks.
“Yes, me and my family. You are lucky that we are taking you in. You participated in the crime while two vampires were killed. You should be grateful I found you first. Without my protection, you would face certain death.” I froze hearing his words.
“You will face the trial where I will be representing you, so you should comply and be grateful, so wipe those tears,” he continued.
I was at a loss for words. I didn’t know what was waiting for me; trial, possible death, or leaving with my masters. That seemed brutal from what I have experienced.
My mind was spinning. Mr. Jules was watching the road. Then we left the city borders and drove for a few more hours. Finally, we were approaching the bridge to Agora island. The island was known as wholly owned by a private community of the ultra-rich. It was very exclusive, and the guards protected the bridge itself, and only specific people were able to cross. I even heard that there is a boat patrol keeping intruders out.
I remembered how Michelle told me that a friend of a friend had visited and seen the island’s riches. Generally, I would be excited to visit, but not today. I was terrified of realizing that now I would be a prisoner on this island, with tight security.
We stopped by a checkpoint at the gate. There was a guard in the cabin looking at our car.
Mr. Jules opened his window, and the guard recognized him without asking for identification and opened the gate.
We crossed the bridge, and another checkpoint was almost identical to the one we had crossed. Everything repeated itself as we passed another checkpoint.
We drove through the island, passing by the ornate mansion’s gates. It was dark, and there were surprisingly few lights on the street. However, I could still see the giant mansion clearly, with eclectic gardens everywhere.
Finally, we stopped at the smaller building. Mr. Jules left the car and told me to follow him. The building had two guards outside who opened the door for us, and a few others were inside.
He told me to wait and started talking to one of them. They both pressed something on their wrists that looked like an apple watch.
I looked around while they were talking. The whole place had a nasty smell, but I had already been in the car for hours, so it didn’t bother me as much. It was also filled in with huge cages made out of metal bars. There was no one within them.
“I will see you tomorrow,” he said, making a sign to the guards, and then he walked out. My heart dropped. I didn’t like him, but I wanted to be in this place even less.
The guard came over to me and told me to follow him. He opened one of the cages. I didn’t want to go into the cage and shook my head. I thought he would drug me into preparing to fight it, but instead, the guard pressed something on his watch. I was instantly in so much pain that radiated from my neck and went to my stomach that it dropped me to my knees.
“Crawl into a cage if you want the pain to stop,” said the guard.
I tried crawling, almost immobilized by the pain. I was moving little by little, pushing myself through the pain. It felt like a lifetime, but eventually, I crawled into the cage, and the pain disappeared immediately.
The guard locked the cage and walked away without glancing at me.
I was lying on the floor, still exhausted from the pain; tears rolled down my face. I threw up and felt wet all over my pants. I must have peed myself too.
“I guess this is my new life” was the last thought in my head before I fell into darkness.
